Is One Whippet Enough ?

I have 4 Whippets :D When Whippet No2 arrived my first boy Hero was delighted. Played with him, washed him, cuddled him. I think he thought I'd got him a really good prezzie :clown:

Q   Is one whippet enough?

A    YES

Dare I post this

Ignore the above reply* :- " :- " :- " :- " :- " :- "

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion even if they are WRONG[/fo

it is your own decision and you have done right by asking those who post on here. Both myself & Richard have had whippets since early childhood (almost 20 years now) :clown: and would not have a singleton. However it is a personal choice. We currently have 3 & a 1/2 pairs of litetr sisters and agree with earlier comments that it takes longer for dogs of the same age brought up together to 'grow-up'. But it is easir, in many ways, as they do play with each other and help exercise each other when out.

There are pro's and con's, as in all things, and quintessence's comments are as valid as anyone else's as we all base our responses on our own experience / knowledge.

JAX has as much experience as (almost) anyone on this board (in many things in addition to whippets) and is usually worth listening to (usually it is difficult to NOT listen) but even she doesn't know it all

Take advice from the posts and talking to people, eg the breeder of your dog, and make your own decision. You are clearly considering a second (3rd 4th 5th ............) and have done right by asking. IMNHO keep to the same sex.

*Only joking - quintessence's view is as valid as any other :D

since early childhood (almost 20 years now)

Whose she trying to kid !!!!!!!!! more like 40 + :huggles:

Ha ha Jax, you thought the same as me 2 X 20 years!! (w00t)

Dawn's reply has totally disappointed and depressed me, not because she thinks I'm wrong (I probabaly am) but because I had hoped to retire sooner rather than later and increase my little whippet family. Her new definition of middle age means that is now years off. Sparky will have to remain Billy No Mates for a little while longer, but I think he's coping.

Jenny

My friend Penny rescued a little black bitch called Tinker who has had a rotten life, she is now so beautiful, so happy and so in love with Penny and is a single whippet.

Penny has given that little girl back her life and in return Tinker is devoted to her. I think it works well for both of them.

Thanks for the advice; its appreciated.
As many have suggested, its putting his 'nose out of joint' thats the biggest concern, as when I say he's spoiled, he's spoiled  :D

But all whippets are spoiled, and if you have two then it's just another one to spoil and adore

I have Josie who is 17 months and Lola who is 15 weeks :huggles: and I love having both of them. As others have said, it is hard work at first. But it gets easier and easier. And as mentioned, you're feeding and walking one, so why not two? Today we went for a walk in the rain, with the whippets in their coats trit-trotting along the edge of a ploughed field trying not to get their feet wet/muddy  and I was so happy that we had two. One whippet is fantastic. Two is more than twice as good  I am already planning my third, although realistically that won't be this year :b

ah yes... the playing. I forgot to mention that. One whippet quiet. Two whippets a lot of noise! But the playing is so fascinating to watch, I could spend hours just observing my two as they tangle jaws and sing "Waa-waa-eeeya-waah" to each other (and the neighbourhood)

I have 3 whippet's and maybe another one if Misty has a boy  . I alway's said 3 was enough but another little mouth to feed won't kill me (w00t) .

Get another  When you think the time is right :D

I think you need two to sit each side of the fire   He,s a very handsom boy

I agree with everyone else, two is def better than one!!

We got Joshy when Harley was 7 1/2 months old, and I believe it was the best move we ever made.

o:)

There has been no looking back since, after a shaky start they are really starting to get on well now

Good luck with whatever you decide :luck:

Only one thing better than snuggling into your duvet with a whippet and that's snuggling in with two

I totally agree Helen.

When we got Macey we thought our life was complete, until Byron was put up for adoption and since then, we have more love to give than we could ever thought we could give, but the laughs, loves, cuddles and sloppy wet noses in the back of your neck in bed are beyond explanation................

I would seriously have a third one    Just have to twist the OH arms up his back and over his head...... (w00t) (w00t)

My memory dosent go back far enough to when we only had one whippet. We now have ten but they are all desendents of our girl who sadly passed away last year age 14. We are now up to the fifth generation. The more the merrier imo. :))

Think hes still in anniversary mode, cant understand why i forgot Todd the size of him these days.

IMO it's great to have two (or thre.. or.. :b ) but I'd certainly wait a bit first! The pups are great fun, but also quite a bit of work. To me it's important to have the time to properly train, socialise and bond with one dog before adding another youngster. I believe a dog should ideally be 2-3years before getting another puppy. It's a hard wait, but the relationship between secure, mature dog and puppy is much less stressfull on you all.

My latest adition got into a household with two other dogs, one aged 5 and one almost 2. The 5year old did (and still do) keep her position and cool much better than the younger dog. I'm not saying it don't work with several younger dogs - it most certainly do - but I do think it's easier on the older dog if it's at least 3years old. So next time (uh-oh.. gotta have another whippet, huh.. :teehee: ) I''m waiting to Nimbus is 3 at least. Just to be on the safe side :)

:D One whippet is no longer enough......

We've gone and got another boy.

Day 1 - despite what it looks like in the pic our big pup's nose is severely out of joint - he's trying to dominate the youngster and the wee one thinks its just a game.....the negotiations continue.....
