Strike Whippets said:My thoughts on chips verses tattoos is ....a chip is very easy to cut out and the dog will heal soon enough ...so IF that dog had been stolen to pass on then it would look fine to do so after the chips been removed (and yes I agree with Dessie, dogs aren't always scanned for chips even in this day and age, and if they are they aren't very often scanned from head to toe for a migrating chip !!) ....
Whilst a tattooed dog ...Yes may have its ear hacked off, or have battery acid poured on to the tattoo, but no ones really going to buy a dog with a hacked or burnt ear ....and in most cases if the wrong persons got hold of your PET dog they wouldn't go to this much trouble as it would be easier just to let them go if they couldn't sell them .....Hacking an ear off etc .... so the dog can't be traced is of no value to dog thieves at all......I can however see why some racing Greyhounds have this happen to them .....
Well depending on how much of a chunk they cut out to remove a chip i am doubting the dog would look fine??? :- "
Lets be honest, they have to locate the chip first & then assuming they are not skilled surgeons they are gonna try & cut it out willy nilly, either way you are gonna be left with some kind of big hole.
Bearing in mind most types of people that steal dogs are doing so for various reasons not just passing/selling dog on so if for example to breed on with etc the cosmetic appearance does not really matter as long as id has disappeared for lawful appearances.
I really dont think it makes much odds either way, if someone is determined & has stolen your dog they will have encountered both chips & tatoo's & will deal with them accordingly :- "
