Tattooing

My thoughts on chips verses tattoos is ....a chip is very easy to cut out and the dog will heal soon enough ...so IF that dog had been stolen to pass on then it would look fine to do so after the chips been removed (and yes I agree with Dessie, dogs aren't always scanned for chips even in this day and age, and if they are they aren't very often scanned from head to toe for a migrating chip !!) ....
Whilst a tattooed dog ...Yes may have its ear hacked off, or have battery acid poured on to the tattoo, but no ones really going to buy a dog with a hacked or burnt ear ....and in most cases if the wrong persons got hold of your PET dog they wouldn't go to this much trouble as it would be easier just to let them go if they couldn't sell them .....Hacking an ear off etc .... so the dog can't be traced is of no value to dog thieves at all......I can however see why some racing Greyhounds have this happen to them .....  :(

Well depending on how much of a chunk they cut out to remove a chip i am doubting the dog would look fine??? :- "

Lets be honest, they have to locate the chip first & then assuming they are not skilled surgeons they are gonna try & cut it out willy nilly, either way you are gonna be left with some kind of big hole.

Bearing in mind most types of people that steal dogs are doing so for various reasons not just passing/selling dog on so if for example to breed on with etc the cosmetic appearance does not really matter as long as id has disappeared for lawful appearances.

I really dont think it makes much odds either way, if someone is determined & has stolen your dog they will have encountered both chips & tatoo's & will deal with them accordingly :- "

I do know why dogs are stolen and the different reasons they are stolen for ...be it bait for fighting dogs, dogs they think might fight, working dogs, coursing dogs or just for the plain old fur trade etc ...!!!! ...I know it is VERY easy to locate and cut out a chip ..... A 1" gash takes days to start healing ...a few AB's and hey presto !! ...... I know all of this because I have worked with dogs all of my life and at times been places that many people couldn't bear to imagine ....so please don't tell me what I know and have seen .....This is why I decided tattooing was the best way ....but just my personal opinion of course !!! :)

Button obviously is tattooed being a racing greyhound and funnily enough if I'm walking her with William people always ask why he isn't too.

Years ago before microchipping was done we had our dogs tattooed the only problem we had was my mum's old collies tattoo smudged and was difficult to read so she had a disc on her collar with the number on.. When a dog of my mum's went missing a couple of years ago sh was handed onto the rescue that my mum had her from Chippy was chipped but their scanner had broken so she wasn't scanned it was just lucky that we contacted that particular rescue and she was there. My mum was on holiday at the time and Chippy was stayying with my brother

think the soft collars are a good idea caroline and the discs, will look into them

You can buy the collars as extras from the NDTR when you have the dogs tattooed, they send through all the bumpf when they send you the registration certificates, plus you get a free disc in the package. I just had extra discs made with my own address, mobile tel no & saying she was tattooed with the NDTR no on as well!!

I tend to put my mobile no on discs now because the chap who found Numpty tried to ring my home no that was on her disc but misinterpreted our std code (0118) for 0778!! Duh! Otherwise I would have had her back within an hour. I can laugh about it now with hindsight but it was awful at the time

i remember it well that day too,i kept looking on here for any updates and what a relief when it came

think the mobile no is the best option cause you dont want to be sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring, you would be out looking most of the time  will be putting my mobile no on the tag

I personally hate microchips. Had both my boys chipped and Charlie's is now right down in his chest between his front legs and Milo's moved down his shoulder, where he kept getting recurring abcesses. Eventually it started to track down his front leg making him lame so I had my vet remove it.

All mine are tattooed, including the chihuahua's and really didn't have any trouble with any of them.

Good luck with whatever you decide. :luck:

As I said yesterday we had Sidney chipped and he is fine, you can feel his which we do regularly.

Today we booked Ben in to be done on Monday :- "

agree -

the greyhound loose their ear tatt's so they CANT be traced back to their owner/trainer who had a duty of care to them

I had both my lurchers tattoo'd I know from personal experience that not all scanners read all chips and also you have to use a scanner properly for it to read the chip - its not a case of just waving it above their shoulders!!!!

Spot on  ....People also don't realise the organised dog thieves will have their own chip scanners ...so this makes it very easy to trace and remove the chip, or wipe it out with a very strong magnet

weve been told we will need to keep his ear dry for 3 weeks after its been tattooed, dont know how we will manage that in this weather  its about time the weather bucked up im sick of it :(

Get the little man a Balaclava

I seem to remember when this topic came up before that a chap in Canada tattoos on the dog's inner thigh which might be better than ears. Max is tattooed as an ex racer but Tiny isn't - I keep thinking about getting him done but I'm too wimpy. They are both microchipped and tagged but as others have said I can feel Tiny's chip, - it's not nice! :(
