Hi there, I'm new on this forum and just got my we Lurcher puppy 10 days ago. His name is Rax and he is 3/4 Whippet 1/4 Bedlington Terrier Brindle and a right cutie pie.

I live on the isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides (NW Scotland)

He is now just over 9 weeks old and i have been crate training him since his arrival. Generally he is very happy to go into his crate when sleepy but after going out for a pee at night he's not to happy to go back in lol. Same if i need to put him in in the daytime if i need to pee etc !!!!

Anyway I hope that i can get some advice on things as they happen from you guys, if you don't mind.

The worst thing we are trying to overcome is the biting, but only expected i guess at this age.

One question i do have is what sort of weight do you all think he should be getting to at different ages. My thinking that he has so much whippet in him is that he will turn out quite small. He was 3.6Kg today (that about right?)

Will post a pic or 2 if i can sus it out. The name btw is a combo of my old dog RUFF and my Fiance's old dog ZAX, REX is too common so we went with RaX.

Regards

Toby

Thank's guys. It's a bit late now. I'm sure i will hear from a few more tomorrow. As usual thats him just gone for his last pee and I'm off to bed.

Just hope he will settle down for a few hours.

I was blessed with being off on holiday for the past two weeks (not exactly relaxing :) lol) but tomorrow is first day back in the home office.

We shall see how it goes.

Nite everyone.

Toby

Hi there, Thank you, he is a beautiful pup and a bit crazy, Doesn't understand why the cat's won't play etc lol. Well his dad is half whippet half Beddlington and his mum is 100% whippet. He's got quite a short nose hasn't he. Haven't had a dog for years so it's all a big re learning curve. Ruff died when i was about 18, he must have been 16 himself collie x Alsatian and my OH's Dad was a police dog handler so she went through a few also. I'm 30 years old now and when we got permission from the housing to have a dog as well as the 2 cats my OH found this little guy. Waiting on his 1st shots. I made appointment with vets for last Thursday and unfortunately Rax was sick in the car and we had to clean him up so we were 5 min late. The vet wouldn't see us and reception said they wouldn't have vaccinated before 10wks anyway. I was absolutely livid as you can imagine. Especially after making the appointment with the actual vet giving details etc. Only one vet for the whole western isles so not much choice. Now due 1st shots next Monday and 2nd 2 wks later. Poor we guy just wants to go out and explore. We are out in the sticks with moorland backing on to the garden and so many beaches but it's not worth the risk. He is getting bored with the garden though. Anyone got any ideas how we can get him to go back to sleep better after he wakes up for a pee in the night. Or when I'm working for that matter.

Better start some work now, Hmm it's been wet all last week on holiday and now it's blue and sunny.

Tobes.

Now you have me thinking. i was only going by what the people we got him from said. Maybe he does have some collie in him somewhere (again not according to the parents) Hmm. Could it be the Terrier in him that makes him bounce and bark in front of the cats. It's very funny to watch and he will learn that it hurts when you go to far !!!! He has such a cute little growl'y bark. He fetches to and through from the kitchen a ball or old sock etc but sometimes has to be pointed and shown the object to retrieve. Bless. Trying to think of any other traits so far. He will stand up against the side if his food is up there!! doesn't like getting wet or the wind much. basically a pee then mad dash back to the door.

Sorry,

Like i said just got me thinking, What are the bedlington terriers like???

Hi again Toby,

My BeddyxWhippet hates cates!!He would kill one if he had the chance. My friend has 2 beddyx Greyhounds, and they have two cats, and all get on very well,so i suppose its just luck of the draw.Although you know his breeding,he could have some collie in him, somewhere down the line.He is just lovely, all the same!!

Keep in touch.

I must just add that although we had an episode at about 11am after a pee / poo break he was not happy to go back to his crate. Screamed blue murder and I was nearly in tears. I need this work from home job and it's a telephone one !!! In the end i brought his crate through here into the office (it's only about 8' x 4' but he is right behind me and has not whimpered one bit. Snoring quite a bit but hasn't got up and wanted out since 11.20 I know it's a bit long for him but i opened the door at lunch and he wasn't interested. Amazing !!! wonder if it's the sound of the computers, my voice or the warm?? may be he just had enough of winding me up. He is going to go mental i know it when i finish at 5 LOL.

Hi, welcome to the forum, your pup is gorgeous, love the brindles   it is a bit of a shock to the system when you get a puppy isnt it, but they do settle down soon enough and they go from being a total whirlwind to grown up in the blink of an eye, and then you start getting broody for another (w00t) (w00t) xxx

hi and welcome,

sounds like hes lonley, maybe getting him a friend would do the trick (w00t) :-

seriously though, we were advised to cover the crate with a blanket to make it nice and cosy and to put some nice soft toys in so the pup wouldnt be lonley. im not 100% sure if it works or not as we ended up with 2 pups so they kept each other company. but it sounds a good idea,

also we started with the crate in the bedroom and after a few weeks and we knew they were settled, we edge the crate out of the room, a little further every night untill it was in its final resting place.

good luck, Rax is gorgeous

Well he made it until 4:30, 5 hours 10 min. Then the biggest pee eVer. what a good boy. I missed my last hour of work, so a little overtime tomorrow i think.

thank you all for your kind comments. better go play an feed etc now. one handed typing as he is on my lap.

Toby and Rax

What a gorgeous little puppy!!!

welcome to k9!! :D

Hi Guys,

Just weighed Rax again today and he is now 4.2Kg I would appriciate any comment's on weight. I think he could do with putting on a bit more quickly. I understand he will be a skinny pup but you can see more than the 3 ribs you are supposed to (for a mostly whippet that is)

Any Ideas on bulking foods, he is on Wagg complete for adult's and puppies and he loves it. He has also been sharing some chicken etc with the cats.

Just some thought's please and may be an idea of how much he should be gaining per week. so far that was only just over 1 pound a week.

Cheers everyone.

Toby

PS Vets on monday for 1st shots
