My terrors..such a fun!

@Finsky, have you considered GPS collars for them just in case they get into a burrow and can't get out? A friend uses one and as well as locating the dog, it's really interesting to see the distance she goes and the pattern she follows (I should add she is a very highly trained dog, she may be out of sight sometimes but she is super-responsive to a recall, if she ever didn't come straight back my friend would know there was a problem and the collar app would locate her quickly).

Nope...not given those collars a though at all. Ours are not that well behaved when out and about, so they don't get let off lead. 2 of those are VERY eager hunters...they are always on the job so they have 'selective hearing' when there is something that can trigger their prey drive, and it doesn't have to be 'much' for that to happen
Aila (the black and tan one), she is little different to the others and one of these days we will start testing her reactions as I have feeling she will be one that will be in future walking off lead at times....she has less 'worker instinct' and has become much more companion orientated, but time will tell....she is still a young terrier and things may yet to change drastically :D  They are not totally hopeless 'thugs' though....they do have good recall, but only when they know they cannot venture out of the given area and there is times they are capable of giving 100% attention to me and my instructions.:) I just don't trust them enough and don't want to chance it to be sorry later....so leads it is.

Proper terriers - bum up, heads down a hole!

Absolutely! You do know where they are....just not how deep.....we worked very hard to keep ours out of dangerous holes, but every once in a while they caught us wrongfooted. Letting them dig at rabbit/rat/vole holes is much safer (despite what we read in the papers, terriers do NOT fit down rabbit holes - or, as I have also read, rat holes!)).

Yep :D Now that their second seasons are just about over...we've got few invites to go and 'sort out' few little jobs for our girls. What ever form of walks we do, those more of 'getting out to see & experience wider world' from our normal hermit life-style. Terrier 'business' is another thing altogether...that will keep their brains level headed and manageable as a pets. They really need to do some sort of work..either properly or just a 'mock job' digging some holes on the field. :D The rat life on our allotment is very calm at the moment....girls have sorted that out, so we are soon venturing out to seek out some more to help our fellow allotmenteers with their visitors ;)

Funnily enough, ours are not that interested of existing holes, they do have quick sniff into them but they are more interested making their own holes OR following up with their paws all those teasing teeny weeny holes that only their noses can enter...they are soon ripped apart. Ripping plant roots with teeth are SO much fun
