Yorkshire Terrier Problem

been asked to post this, my mum has a rescue yorkie bitch who was rescued by my dad about 1 yr ago from a house of 30 dogs, dad got her a took her to our kennels and has worked with her on socialising, getting her back to full health and generally just been a dog , you can imagine what her early time must have been like locked up for all that time!!! we thought she had no eyes as her hair was so matted round them!! anyway dad and i have worked hard with her to encourage the real her out of that sad shell and so she became available for rehoming , my mum(dads ex wife ) was looking for another yorkie to be company for hers to she had her , now we have very serious toilet issues, she will only toilet in the house where she wants to, no particular area just in the house, she has tried crate training, didnt work, she has tried lots and lots of walks, didnt work, you name it she has tried it and mum is really worried as we all feel this stems back to the trauma of her early life and this is a behavioural issue ? the vet has suggested speying ?

has anyone got any ideas on what to try next?

mum is in hospital at min with spinal injury so cleaning up wee and poo 24/7 is not in the notes for recovery !!! (w00t)

Some years ago my OH and I got his mother a rescue yorkie bitch, Katie, she had been a brood bitch with a puppy farmer and knew only life in a kennel. We had the same problem with toilet training her you could put her outside for ages waiting for her to go and she wouldn't then as soon as you let her back in she would go in the house .

Sorry to say despite trying everything we could think of including penning her in the kitchen thinknig she wouldn't go in her bed but she did it in her bed my mother in law didn't work so she was never left on her own we never stopped her doing it in the house :rant:

i am finding this so hard after all the efforts gone into rescue and secure this poor little mite a forever future, just so despairing at times and with mum being so poorly and will be for some time she is desperate for a break from the constant tiddles shall we say!!! some of the others from that horror house were not so lucky and the ending was very different and were sadly pts due to a whole manner of problems but she was one of the lucky ones at least, i do think it is down to what happened to her and she is almost laying down the law in her mind as to she will do what she wants when she wants? just imo that is? but she does seem to have the bladder of an elephant when she wants :- "

Have you tried those drops or stakes you put on/in the ground that have smells to encourage dogs to pee near them. I found them helpful to a certain extent with my bitch.

Also when she widdles in the house, mop it up with something that can be put outside in the garden where you want her to go. She will hopefully smell it out there and want to use that spot then.

There are special cleaners that you can use to totally get rid of the smell of pee in the house, so the dog doesn't associate that area with tolieting again. I'm not sure of brand names, I'm sure someone here will know or pet store can advise. The normal household cleaners don't work for this.

Hopefully someone with more experiance can give you more advice. Good Luck! :luck:

Just wanted to add the obvious....

Loads of praise when she goes outside, make such a fuss of her. And no shouting at her when caught in the act inside. Just discretely clean it up and say nothing. You don't want her to start "hiding" her wee accidents.

thank you , mostly done all of those except the scent one ? she isn scolded due to her early start but she does know she is doing it and holds for soooooooooooooo long rather then pee outdoors?? if she is crated overnight whilst mum is sleeping she will hold it then of course she is put out in garden to do her business first thing in morn and she will hold it and hold it and hold til mum gives in as she thinks its too much for her bladder !!!

The scent stuff I use is in a bottle with a dropper. It's from Four Paws, called "Wee-wee. Puppy Housebreaking aid."

I no longer need it. It's in it's box with less than a third used. PM me if you'd like me to post it over to you, that would be no problem. It may or may not work for the little one, but worth a try?

nina please keep your nose out! this is a sad and sorry situation that doesnt need busy bodies sticking their oar in!!!! when you have done half as much as my fmily have for dog rescue over the years then you will be qualified to comment!!! oh sorry i forgot you have been breeding iggies for 16 yrs -_- -_- -_- oops sorry fell asleep at that point as we have heard it all before!!! (w00t) (w00t) how would a cross occur when the dogs live in different towns????? maybe you could educate us all nina (w00t) mmmmmmmmm me thinks this is the lady ho only rescue coz she thinks it will make a champion (w00t) not some lowly little crossbreed tee hee :- "

yes they are aware and thats why we do so much for rescues coz we REALLY care about any breed x or not but sadly some only will rescue if they feel it will raise their status as YOU well know :- " how is the bitch you rescued?? as you seem to only have bothered to rescued just the one??? pmsl at ya!!!!!! :thumbsup:

yes i would coz by that statement alone it proves how little you care about the breed, very sad coming from someone who says they care so much about the breed, not really a good advert is it? but then i doubt anyone would approach someone so rude and so lacking in feelings for a breed, so sad for a breed but by all means post away im more then happy to see it posted as it will show to all how little you will help a person or dog in need. to the genuine offers of help i thank you , im hoping we will get this little lady the help she needs , thanks for the offer of the spray im sure mum will be most grateful, she will be in hospital for a good while as yet so its all hands on deck with mops etc lol!! will keep you all posted on how she is doing :thumbsup:

Re getting rid of smell so the poor little dog won't keep going back to it, have you tried washing the area with a strongish solution of biological washing powder (must be bio to remove the protein in urine etc), then rinse and when dry wipe over with alcohol.? Surgical or methylated spirit is good but gin will do in a crisis (w00t) . Let it dry naturally.

You may well have already tried this but if not, it is worth a go I think - worked for me when training Polly, like a dream!! :thumbsup:

she has no particular place she goes just flatly refuses point blank to go to the tiolet anywhere other then in the house? have washed it down with bleach but could try bio powder? thank again :thumbsup:

I use good old tesco value bio washing powder for my floor - nice and cheap!!

Evie - chill pill! I like it! How do you get to add things like that, do you add it like a photo?

Janet - I think the gin is best used to relax after you've spent ages waiting for your dog to wee outside, then having to clear up inside after you took your eyes off her for a second :lol:
