Whippets That Have Never Run!!!

My three get let off together all the time :) , we have a saluki near us who's never been off the lead because of there reputation for not coming back, but they wont give it a chance makes me feel sad, as sight hounds are born to run :(

Mine are all quite good, Frodos brillant as is his dad Rory. The bitches are, well, bitch like  All Polly thinks about is her ball, a thousand rabbits could run past, as long as they did'nt TAKE her ball (w00t) She never goes further than I can throw, have you seen my right arm :b

I can fully understand (because Im one of those boring people that can see both sides of every subject) why people are sometimes fearful of letting their dogs free run. Its almost like the family that wont let thier kids go down the park.

There are millions of cats that never go outside the home.

I know loads of people with house rabbits.

The animals in the zoo never have a free run.

millions of parrots and other birds (cant spell budgeregar :b ) never fly.

I could go on and on, hav'nt even STARTED on the animals we all eat.

I feel a bit sorry for the Whippets, but if they go out for a walk daily and their owners feed and love them, its better than free running for a rabbit then being tied up under a van in the freezing cold all night. Rant over :b

We've had a few people stay here with us with Whippets that have never let them run free, except for in the garden. I think it's really sad too.

My 5 have 2 good free runs every day - it's difficult with Leia as she is looking for things all the time and has no interest in me. Her recall is brilliant if I have chicken with me, and there is nothing to chase. I normally have to drive them somewhere just so she can have a good run.

I love seeing them all run and play together.

I can understand folk being nervous - but there are plenty of places to try the dogs first in a relatively secure area. A friend with a big garden, and enclosed park or school field, and dog training school....

I also feel sorry for the parrots who never get to fly. But I think being a houserabbit with lots of companionship and the chance to run round the house and razz round the sofa beats being stuck outside alone in a tiny hutch. :(
