Whippet Collars

Why is the whippet collar shaped in the way that it is? Is it so that the broader, central part supports the long neck? In which case, why aren't they this width all the way round? What's the opinion of the cloth/material collars that some whippets seem to wear on photos posted on the forum? I presume they are softer for wear in the house, but are they suitable to wear for walks?

Hi, The leather fishtail collar is indeed shaped that way to have the widest part of the collar on the front of the neck. I am one half of collars R Us and make the soft martingale collars. My girls wear theirs 24/7 and I walk them in them too. very strong, lined collars. The trim does wear out ( NOT the webbing) but we offer a refurbishment service. I have been using these collars for over 10 years now, wouldn't use anything else. They can also be washed.

the leather fishtail collers would be realy heavey if the metal work was as wide as the wide part of the coller so making it that shape means the bukles etc can be standard coller size while the maid body a coupke of inches wide. mine were 1" fabric collers in the houes but i much prefare leather for walking out and if fitted properly you wont get out of them but they must be fastend high up behined the ears not at the bottom of the neck. you will fined whitch coller you and your dog prefare

A breeder once told me that the collars are deliberately shaped, as traditionally whippets being trained for racing were encouraged to pull against the collar, and so build up the muscle along the back and hindquarters without choking the dog. Not sure whether this is correct or not, but it sounds quite credible to me.

I think the martingale collars are beautiful, but use plain leather ones as 2 of mine do pull quite hard on the lead.
