Dear all, I am new here so looking for an advise. We decided to get whippet puppy but as prices are 2000 for KC register ones and I simply cannot afford it. I just need healthy family pet and yes I know the about the difference b/w KC not KC and know about puppy farms. Due to high demand breeders raised the prices by 3 times and I am not complaining, just looking into current covid reality. So my options at the moment to get one from pedigree parents (mum with papers dad is not or other way around) of family pet house or get from the farmer who has workings dogs and was not considering breeding for money. My question is how it would affect the dog temperament? Shall I got the one from pet family home with kids etc or the one from the working breed if I need whippet as pet? Need to think fast as they selling by enormous speed! Thank you

Hi I would go for a pedigree before farm bred, the pedigree would hopefully be brought up to be more social than farm bred. I know people who have pedigree whippets and they are no different temperament wise as my kc. I understand the prices are seriously steep at the moment for KC whippets.

I would never buy a pup from a home with young children. Even the nicest people seem to think it's fine for children to maul pups about, carry them round, treat them like toys. I am well aware that there will be breeders who are more thoughtful and I am tarring all with the same brush, but I have seen too much of the other sort to trust anyone.

Have you looked in rescue centres? I think a lot of people who got pups earlier in lockdown will by now be realising their lifestyle is incompatible and giving up their dogs.

Unfortunately the rescue will not give a dog to the family with kids younger then 10 and my son is 7. I called many of them in past 2 weeks and I would take other breeds as well but no chance.

Try some of the smaller independent rescues - they sometimes have more flexibility.

Rescue remedies homes dogs to people with young children and have many different breeds ;)

What ever you do,don't fall for paying more for a blue whippet. They are as common as muck and nothing special.

no advise as I am not familiar with the UK "scene" when it comes to these things. But when I read the thread title I was half expecting a discussion regarding the music of Devo.... whippet advice??? ...whippet good :p

Oh my gosh - too funny!

Race bred pups are much much cheaper. Racing people have a litter of pups when they want a new pup for themselves so they do not breed for profit. Downside is that they often go other racing homes. Just paid £550 for my latest one and that was way more than the previous three. Coursing bred pups will be the same. Not bred for profit but bred for purpose. Not all race bred pups are KC but many will be. I know of two pups near Dartford up for grabs but to racing homes only.

You are right, people have started closing ranks when it comes to pups. In the lurcher world they have started only letting the pups go to working homes at a fraction of the cost. I know I can get a Beddy x Whippet for around £250 or on a free.
