hi and thanks. she is not my only dog but she is my only show dog. Surely as a responsible owner if you have no intention of breeding your dogs should be spayed to reduce ovarian cancers uterine infections and such?

Charlotte is my first show dog and all other dogs before her where pets and all of them where spayed and i never have had urinary problems with any of them. also when bitches are spayed surely it take s lot of pressure off the owner when the bitch is due into season? i have never had to deal with a bitch in season before and quite truthfully it is not my favourite time, having to lock her up and not take her out to the beach which is her favourite thing to do not being able to take her to market with me etc etc.

what do other people think, if you have no intention of breeding should the bitch or dog be spayed or is there no harm in leaving them entire?

like i say iam no expert in this sort of thing and its great to be able to talk to other people about this and get constructive feed back.

Thanks to every one who replied. :D :)

Myself, If I have no intentions of breeding then I have my girls or boys desexed.

Though, If she is still showing in the ring she has to be left entire. At least till she is finished.

I had sled dogs for years in the states and some were entire and some wern't, as far as their ability...it changed nothing, both worked just as hard and lost nothing once desexed.

On the other hand, the ones that were desexed could race and work all winter (no seasons and 9-10 months of snow :D ) and the boys that were desexed kept their mind on work not girls no matter what was going on at home with the girls

Mind you, this is just my opinion :D you'll have to see how you feel and whats right for you and your girl.

She is beautiful by the way  I also have a Limey daughter

Thanks you for you rcomments, iam still in 2 minds as to breed her or not its a big decision! i think if i dont breed from her i will spay her with in the next year. You mentioned you had a limey daughter as well who is her mum, charlottes mum was Calahorra watch thbirdie i have been trying to track down other people who have offspring by limey wendye has sent me photos of some limey kidsand its great to see them. if you have a photo i would love to see her.

Cheers

It is a big decision.

My girl is from Eliza, CH. Calahorra Covent Garden. If you click on my website there is heaps of photos on there of Makayla. My email addy is also on there, I would love if you could foward some of the picks of some of the limey kids! It'd be good to see how they look compared to some i have seen.

Its been awhile since I've spoken to Wendye. I know there is a lovely sister to my girl in Darwin, though I don't think she shows her and I know Wendye kept a girl as well out of the litter.

If you want to carry on showing your bitchafter she has been speyed, i'm fairly certain that you need to get a permission to show cert from the KC.

edited to say: I've just realised your in Auz

In the UK it's no longer required to have 'permission to show', but you do need to inform the KC and they will send you a letter confirming they have been informed. This changed a few years ago. It's very straightforward.

In Australia you can only show desexed dogs in neuter classes, which are not often offered.

There are pluses and minuses for both keeping animals entire or desexing them. Spayed bitch will obviously not get uterine infection, or cancer of the bits that are not there. However there is some evidence emerging that some other cancers are more common in desexed dogs. The only absolute advantage of having bitch spayed is that you do not have to worry about her seasons or unwanted pregnancies.

I just had 2 bitches spayed and one of them seems to have a slight incontinence problem, she pees little bit when excited. She is 2 years old, and never done this before, not even as a puppy. Over the years I have heard of number of spayed bitches with this problem, some much worse, and it does not always become apparent immediately, sometime it takes years. It is hormonal and sometimes responds to medication. Of-course, that does not mean that every spayed bitch will become prematurely incontinent, but the chances are higher than with entire bitch.

Yes its all worth considering. Its a catch twenty two situation, do i or dont I?

I still have a little bit of time before i have to make the decision so i can take it easy and have a good think about it.

Once again thanks to all who sent in advice your help is very much appreciated and how kind you are to help a total stranger some people from the other side of the world!

thanks you all again
