What breed is he?

Handsome handsome boy! I can see why the vet though GSD x rott though.

Can I ask who you used for DNA and a rough costing? I had an unpleasant encounter with someone who told me my dog is not a JRT x even though its very clear he is, and eben though i doubt ill hear from this person again i just want to feel smug they were wrong :p

What a handsome chap :)

i bought a wisdom panel test from amazon!! It was the test 2.0 and I think it was about £50 on there. You can get some fancy tests but all I wanted was the basics :)

Hahahaha yes we’ll go ahead! Very happy with the results, I’d say they are pretty accurate!

Hi all!
Just an update for those who are interested :)
Oakley at 7.5 months old and 22kg
The first thing people say to us when greeting him is “ is he a German shepherd? “ ha ha ha! He definitely does look shepherd like.
I am going to get him neutered soon, can anyone advise me on the best age please? Thank you! X

GSD x borser collie is my vote. I got my puppy neutered at 6 months and he is a lot calmer :)

There are quite a few kelpies around here ...and we see quite a few in rescues as they are such bright dogs who need exercise and mental stimulation

Oh 100%!!! He is so intelligent & definitely does need a lot of exercise !! He’s nuts, but also a very very cuddly dog & he gets very attached to you. When he’s been naughty he comes up to you and puts his head on your neck and paws on your shoulder as if to cuddle you and say sorry!

Most vets recommend not neutering dogs until they are physically and mentally mature, which could be anything from one to two years depending on breed/type. Early neutering can affect the growth of the joints. Male dogs need testosterone to develop confidence so early neutering can also result in a more insecure - and often therefore more aggressive - dog.

But there is a shedload of contradictory advice out there, and research doesn't seem to have given a clearcut answer, so you need to read, read, read and come to your own decision (bear in mind that when there is lack of scientific date, people tend to get very entrenched in their opinions so take everything with a pinch of salt).

Two things are for sure - (1) being entire is the 'standard model' for dogs, what nature intended, and (2) you can't stick them back on again ;) And there is a saying, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.'

Ok great thank you!!
I have to get him neutered as I have another in tact Male dog who i could not get neutered due to respiratory issues, they get on well 99% of the time but they have had the occasional scrap, so I think it’s better safe than sorry as I don’t want anything to happen which could possibly be prevented!
Thanks for your advice :)

There is a temporary solution - an injection that offers the same effects but that wears off. So you could see how it changes his behaviour before you make the final decision.

Ooooh!!! Ok thanks Joanne I wasn’t aware of that! I’ll ask at his next appointment!

Bear in mind that a neutered and an entire male still might not get on so it might not be a solution to the scraps.

Yup_ I've got one neutered and one entire boy at the moment who are definitely not best friends. They had a scrap this morning over a pebble!

Great! Thank you! :)

I just read further back in the thread that you already suggested GSD x collie lol. I don't really tend to read all of the thread if it's long.

Reg. Dog neutering I researched it a lot and decided on the best decision for our dog and family. For us, the pros outweighed the cons. The very limited research available is contradictory and very often only shows correlations not causal effects. Then there's also the problem of breeds being more susceptible to thing like hip dysplasia anyway, without neutering, than others etc. I'm also not a big buyer into natural is best. Are the situations that we have domesticated our dogs to live in natural? For our lifestyle, there were other factors to consider besides health (although would obviously not do anything to damage his health.) Do lots of research and consider the effects that neutering will have on your dog in all spheres and make the best decision for your dog and situation.
