I'm considering having a website built ( or learning how to do it myself (w00t) ). Any idea how much it costs? Are you able to update yourself once it is built? Etc. Any advice welcome.

I've been researching this for work Juley for the past month and this is what i've found!

The question of cost is a 'how long is a piece of string' question - price will depend on a number of factors

* how big a site do you want (how many pages)

* how complex will it be (ie do you just want static pics and text or animations too? will it be interative? do you want people to be able to buy things from you etc)

* do you want to be able to 'content manage it' ie change text & images yourself

* do you want something custom built, or built from a ready-made package?

My suggestion is that you put together a design brief stating what the purpose of your site will be, giving an idea of the size/layout eg homepage, gallery, links page, and a list of websites you like and WHY

Then send it to some web designers ( google it if you don't know any good ones - be sure to visit their sites to look at their work - quality varies widely) and ask for a quote.

If you're building it yourself from a package - you'll still need to know the above in order to buy the right package for the job,

then to talk to someone else who has done it :luck: :luck:

Juley im glad you asked this question because im sick of waiting for Ed's friend to do one for us. That's the trouble when you get mates doing you a favour.

He did say that once it's done, you can update it yourself. If anyone has any info on website design, im interested too. :thumbsup:

I'd have a go at it yourself Juley; your photoshop skills are very good :thumbsup: and to be honest, this is the critical part of website design, certainly what I spent most of my time on when it was a large part of our work. The html part isn't difficult to learn and to be honest you will have to get to grips with it at some point so that you can update it yourself. Most website designers aren't particularly keen to keep updating people's sites, I know as I always groan when someone asks me to do it :b :lol: If you enjoy using Photoshop, it could be quite a fun project for you.

Juley,

The first thing to do is to draw out what you want the website to look like and what content you want to display. The creation is actually the really easy part its getting the content and the look right. Is this for fun / interest or are you doing it as part of a business?

Basically your requirements will dictate how complex it is. i.e do you want to have a blog, take visa payments , have a database included.

Commercial website design today is much more to do with database programming, if you do require one with e-commerce potential it gets a lot more complicated (why we got out of doing it professionally :- " ); but if it's just a showcase for your dogs there's no reason you shouldn't be able to do one yourself. :thumbsup:

If it is just a showcase site for dogs (which is what i want and i believe what Juley is after), how do you go about doing it and what are the costs?
