As most of you will know, Archer has had a spell with a runny bottom :x and no weight gain, so after all of the usual diet tricks, I took him to the vets and explained the situation. Blood was taken and the pup weighed and my vet advised me to feed white tripe. Everyone I spoke to said this was strange advice, due to white tripe being 70% water. Anyway, after several days with dire results,

I stopped listening to the vet and took the advice of my butcher and now Archer is doing pretty normal poos and looks brilliant.

ANYWAY, first vet visit was £50, which was consultation and the taking of a blood sample. As the official advice made the situation worse, and the butchers advised diet was doing the trick, I didnt go back to the vets, but came home from work today to find a bill from the vets, which they are demanding I pay in the next week, or I will incur admin charges.

This bill is for £100.12 and this is made up from £75 for lab fees and sample processing. (w00t) I realise that there are charges, but surely this is excessive???? All the results I got from the bloods taken were that the pup was low on everything, but as I suggested to the vet, wouldnt any animal be low when they had hardly kept anything in their system for longer than twenty minutes over a week??

I am fuming and am going to be phoning the vets after the Bank Holiday and questioning their prices. I think that when bills are going to be this high, the client should be advised of estimated costs.

Before all of this happened, I was considering a vet change ...............this has nailed the lid in their coffin  I am afraid.

Like I said, I stopped the tripe business pretty smartish and after lots of good advice from real working dog people, have come up with a raw diet, which is doing the dog proud. I have also sourced a different vet, who I shall use in future. I am still galled about the charges though, which I think are excessive.

Glad that Archer's Tum is better :)

Vet prices seem to vary around the country too. Vaccinations, Neutering and Spaying can vary considerably from all over the UK

Our town has a big fancy tv vet( he was on an rspca show)

he charges £49 for a jab, i use an old type horse, cow and dog vet who charges £33.

I only use the vet if i cant buy it in, its only about £8 from Ireland

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS YOURSELF, IT COST ME £31.00 THAT INCLUDED THE CONSULTATION, A JAB OF ANTIBIOTICS, A JAB OF VITAMIN D AND A FEW SACHETS OF ELECTROLYTE.

HE ALSO TOLD ME TO PUT HIM ON CHICKEN AND RICE WHICH DONE HIM WONDERS, IM JUST STRUGGLING TO CHANGE HIM ONTO A DRY COMPLETE NOW :(

I LIVE IN THE CITY THOUGH WHERE THERE A DOZENS OF VETS SO I THINK THEY HAVE TO PRICE COMPETITIVELY.

NICE DOG! :) GLAD TO HEAR HE IS BETTER NOW WHAT BREEDING IS HE?

GOOD LUCK

ANT

Least you had sensible advice and a tiny bill in comparison !!! Archer is 3/4 greyhound, 1/4 whippet and at last looking really good. With help from a brilliant local butcher, I now feed him lamb breast,( minced, bone and all,) with boiled rice or pasta, wholemeal biscuits and some live yoghurt. He also gets whatever vegetables I have at hand, raw but whizzed in the blender a little.

All through this though, he has been a fit, active pup and now I am hoping to get him in decent shape for the seasons Game Fairs.

Good luck with yours :luck:

Caroline.Dont take this the wrong way.But is this the same vet that laughed at the vaccines Archer was jaged with.Cause i thought at the time ,that all he wanted was you're money. Now the vet i buy my vaccines from, isnt much better, but he's honest, and not out of the way as regard's bill's.But he told me himself, that his experience with racing type dog's is more or less nill,as everyone uses the specialist greyhound vets.Who ,i might add.get it wrong a lot of time's too.But boy can they charge.Worm tab's from these boy's are almost £3 for drontal+,as regard's his £1.40.Xray'saround £100,as regards his £20.But as i said ,he has nothing to do with racing dog's and agree's that this is a more specialised area, that he wont get into.Iam realy so happy for you that thing'a are eventualy going right with Archer. He is a class looking pup, with a lot of growing and filling out to do yet,and hopefully now he will do just that.Ido wish you all the best with him in the showing department, but i hope his real place is up the straight n narrow after the lure.My boy's n girls are doing great on the minced chicken,Bone n all.But i do mix the way i feed it ,from raw to cooked now and again, with all the veg.Pyper is 25 inches, and about 53lb,and bully lookin in the head, and on the other end Nicki is 21 n 1/2,and about 34lb.I should have two staying under,as Charmed is 21 n 3/4,with very little groath plates left.Good :luck: :luck: :luck: . .Billy...PS.Did you get the post with the jag bottles on it .

You should try the vets here in Surrey consultation alone is £27-50 and a course of puppy vacs will set you back just over £80 (w00t)

I've had 2 lots of lab fee's to pay over the last month and they was both just short of £100.

The first one was 2 8x8mm biopsies and the second one was a 6x4inch piece of skin.

But talking of vets bill, I've just payed out £100.81 today for:-

Consult

antibiotics

homeopathic remedy

2x imune system boosting stuff

Niether did I .....I think Billy knows his dogs better than most

I do agree that a Greyhound vet is probably more accurate and cheaper than normal pet vets .....and they know their running dogs ......My vet knows I use him for the norm or emergencies .......but I go to my Greyhound vet for injuries, bloods and advice :D

:luck: with your lad :luck:

Hey Mark Brick...I did not say a word about Billy when all that crap was flying about, so I suggest you get your facts straight before having a go.

And this is someone else's thread being hijacked...
