Bumped into a friend this evening (not closer than 2 metres!). He told me that his dog had been to the vet due to a gash in lower leg. For 6 stitches he was charged £500 (on top of his Pet plan account). Opinions on the fee please.

Was he put under for it, or just given a local?

I must admit, I don't know. If I see him I will ask.

A couple of years back Jasper was sedated for X-rays for a limp - it wasn't at all clear where the problem was so they had to X-ray him from paw to shoulder (actually, as I suspected all along, it was just caused by a corn). While he was under they took bloods, scaled his teeth, clipped his claws, and gave him a good feel all over as he doesn't make it easy for them to put their hands on him when he's awake!

That came to around £500, the main cost being the X-rays.

My vet is VERY reasonable though, and I'm always amazed at what others charge.

I recognize that x-rays and the likes would pump up the bill but as far as I am aware, he only had 6 stitches. Out of interest, I will try to get a more accurate account when I see him again. I do know that one or two people have raised their eyebrows at the vet in question with regards to high bills.

I called my vet to arrange T's worming tablet to be sent out as they are closed except for necessary appointments.

£5 for the tablet, plus £4.95 for postage.

It wasn't even gift wrapped, never mind hand delivered. Normal postage - they hiked the price for taking it to a post box (presumably with a bucket load of other mail too).

I was pretty cross.

Oh, and please don't tell Mr F.

I would expect they put him under for that. The cost depends on the individual vet and the area as well. It does sound a little high to me . Libby was knocked out to have her teeth cleaned and some removed , claws clipped and anal glands cleaned and a course of antibiotics . It was £320 but her vet is cheaper than some others in the area .

Anaesthetic circa £150. X-rays £30 each. Out of hours charge £150.
Penicillin shot £20 cleaning and stitches plus time £100.
All estimates based on experience of course.
Was it a Specialist out of Hours vet like Vets Now? They are very expensive.

Extortionate. But not surprised.

Out of hours vet for Henry who sadly we had to have put to sleep 2 days later:£203.
He went in at 7.30 am.....hardly the middle of the night!
Cost us £2000 in total and he still didn't make it.
So not surprised about other extortionate vets.

For me it’s a bit of a fence sit! We all moan at the high prices we are made to pay, then we sing there praises when they save our pet, some vets seem to be good sorts then others are just pains from the off, I’ve never had a row with a vet but I’ve defo lost my rag with the hitler style reception people, I got called a lier by one once but I was proven right two days later .

We've been to the vet this afternoon to have a grass seed removed from one of the girls ears. A temporary vet was on duty, he spent a few minutes talking to us beside the car took her from us and within no more than 10 minutes she was back out with us and he showed us the offending grass seed. (nice and pointed with long whiskers, must have been 3/4 to 1 inch long.
£45.00

Should have said the consultation fee alone was £203. Three different vets dealt with Henry with differing levels of competence.

It takes a long time to get closure for this kind of event. I am so sorry for your loss. You did your very best. Sometimes the outcome we want so much isn't to be.
