Hi all!! Do any of you have vegetarian whippets? Have you ever had any problems with having a vegetarian dog? What vegetarian foods do you recommend?

Well you probably guessed, i'm vegetarian  & was wondering if it was necissary to feed a dog meat. :teehee:

Hi and welcome to k9

I am a fellow vegetarian too, but for my dogs its meat all the way :D I think it is what they would choose so thats what they get - even the horrible bits like tripe and liver :p

I have heard about veggie dog food, and that you can bring a dog up as a vegetarian but I don't personally think its fair. However, each to their own  I think that Wafcol do a veggie dog food, and there are other companies (Happidog I think is veggie but I could be wrong).

Do you have a dog or were you thinking about getting one?

I'm hopefully getting one in the near future :luck: , i really want what's best for the dog so if sticking to meat ensures a happier dog then so be it!! I was just wondering -whippets being "performance" dogs, if it was impossible for them to maintain their health on a meat free diet.

Hiya,

I'm a veggie too :) but my dogs all get a 'natural' diet of bones, meat and veg. I did know a dog that was fed on 'vitalin' veggie dog food and it seemed perfectly happy and healthy tho.

Good luck for getting your new doggie :luck:

I reckon that perhaps someone who raced or worked their whippets would say that meat is essential for the protein content, but for a pet dog it might not be as neccessary? I'm just guessing here :p

I have never looked into the ingredients or nutritional analysis of veggie dog food so I'm not sure. If you were only going to feed kibble anyway then I couldn't see a problem with feeding veggie kibble and not meat kibble - if you see what I mean

Perhaps do some more internet searches to find people who do feed veggie and see what they recommend :)

I feed Sada mainly on raw meat and bones, shes likes a carrot and has been

know to steal a potato from the cupboard.

But i wouldnt imagine you could have a completly vegetarian dog can you

 a potato? surely there was something more appatising than a raw potato? I get the feeling some dogs think themselves as hilarious in their mischief!! (w00t)

Be careful with Raw potatos .............

POISONOUS SUBSTANCES TO YOUR DOG

Potatoes, Green skins and green sprouts in potatoes (which have also poisoned humans) contain Solanum alkaloids, which are toxic. Mashed, cooked potato is fine. Take care with bags of potatoes that may be in the kitchen or out houses

Really............i didnt know,

I will make sure she doesn't do it again. She's done it a couple of times now, i

think she thinks they are balls as she chases them around for a bit before

she eats them.

Thanks for the info the spuds have now been moved

Jodillanhn, I just noticed that there's a link to a veggie pet website in the FAQ forum, if you go to the feeding section and scroll down. It might give you some more info
