what does everyone think of ear tattooing??,weve decided to have jacob tattooed instead of been microchiped.

the reason for going for this option is that im not impressed with the microchip anymore, what with olivers chip going down onto his shoulder and noahs is steadily going down the side of his spine  . im hoping noahs as stopped moving  he had his put in 3 months ago.

all been well jacobs booked in for tuesday ,takes seconds to do and costs £25

blimey trish, thats not good

i can feel gypsys, but hopefully it will stay in the right place

I have all the puppies I breed tattooed ...... I used to have my lot chipped, but as you said they move, and on my Jacob you can feel it so it would be very easy to cut out if he was stolen ...

with olivers and noahs you can get hold of them and lift them up,they are just under the top layer of skin!!!.

LOL ......I guess theres no harm in asking

Our greyhound had his ears tattoo'd all fine... over and sorted quiet quickly.

Sidney has a chip, you can feel it around his shoulder and I often check on it..

Haven't decided which way to go with Ben yet :ermm:

Now your talking........im having them a fairy

done each, oh and maybe a couple of flowers

I think its a great idea, but I'd be too scared to get them done :sweating: Old Dog Devon squeals if he thinks you're going to touch his ears, unfortunately living with ear-chewing iggies ain't his favourite thing :(

Let us know how it goes though, I'd certainly be interested in finding out :luck:

They do squeal .....and you have to hold them still whilst the tattoo is punctured into their ear and then the inks rubbed in afterwards .......I had a job holding a few of my pups, but its worth it in the end ... :) ...they had treats and a game of ragging and forgot about it soon enough

I guess its catch 22.

If stolen i have heard of many dogs that have had their ears hacked off or if tatooed in the groin or elsewhere, chunks hacked out to try & remove the tattoo, also battery acid poured over the area to try & remove the tattoo.

Equally i know of some whose chips have been attempted to have been cut out :(

Its really the devil & the deep blue sea BUT i will take my chance with chips that are slightly more inconspicuous ;)

The world's a funny old place isnt it, all that suffering they would

cause to take something that wasn't theirs

When Numpty Sophie went missing last year everyone kept saying that it was a shame she wasn't microchipped because it would make such a difference if/when she was found. As it turned out, the chap who picked her up was determined to get in contact direct with myself and not hand her over to any rescue/Police where they MIGHT have scanned her and then what? So a microchip would have been of no use to her, whereas if she had a tattoo they could have rung a 24/7 number.

So I resolved to have her tattooed once she was back, which I did and I shall have her pups all tattooed before they go to new homes. You get a tag from the NDTR with their tel no on and I also had a couple extra done plus you can also buy soft collars with the NDTR telephone number that the dogs can wear all the time, if you so wish.

My thoughts on chips verses tattoos is ....a chip is very easy to cut out and the dog will heal soon enough ...so IF that dog had been stolen to pass on then it would look fine to do so after the chips been removed (and yes I agree with Dessie, dogs aren't always scanned for chips even in this day and age, and if they are they aren't very often scanned from head to toe for a migrating chip !!) ....

Whilst a tattooed dog ...Yes may have its ear hacked off, or have battery acid poured on to the tattoo, but no ones really going to buy a dog with a hacked or burnt ear ....and in most cases if the wrong persons got hold of your PET dog they wouldn't go to this much trouble as it would be easier just to let them go if they couldn't sell them .....Hacking an ear off etc .... so the dog can't be traced is of no value to dog thieves at all......I can however see why some racing Greyhounds have this happen to them ..... :(
