The family has a 9 month old Rottweiler with an allergic skin reaction probably mites. Has proved very costly to treat. We should have taken out insurance but didn't. Now looking at the insurance but does anyone know if any of the insurers will cover any previous conditions after a set time such as a year or so, or will skin condition she has be excluded for policy life? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm pretty sure any existing conditions will not be covered to be honest . I'm not totally sure about a condition they have had before but hasn't been a problem.for a while. What ever u do though don't try and cover it up cos I don't know about other insurance companies but Sainsburys always look at the full medical history .

On a side note , have a look at what is in your dogs diet as grains can make a skin condition worse . Things like golden paste and raw unprocessed coconut oil added to the diet can help with skin problems too

It is possible to get a letter, for some conditions, from your vet to say that the dog is now fully recovered. Some insurance companies will accept these and cover for the condition. I have known this to happen for a condition like an upset tummy but not sure a) if a vet would declare a skin condition cured or b) if an insurance company would accept this sort of condition as "cured".

My advice would be to take out Pet Insurance anyway. I have had to fork out £4,000 in the past to diagnose and treat a lameness in my old dog. I did, then find an insurance company (Asda) that would insure a nine year old dog. Her leg was not covered but she still went through many thousands in old age related conditions. I insured the next dog and she went through £6,000 worth of insurance for just one condition.

Do not think that they will not find out about previous conditions. They have retired vets and nurses employed to ferret out these things.
