How would you get on with a KC reg whippet over a Greyhound?

I'm pretty sure this would be considered a straight 50/50 but would a pup from this litter be able to register & race BWRA?

Also neither parent is BWRA registered, does this matter if you have 5 gen pedigree for both parents?

If this mating was to take place, in my opinon , there would be no reason why you could not register them

but im not on the bwra committee so can not speak for them

the only thing i would say is that this cross would not be fast enough to compeate with our non ped whippets

The litter is due this weekend and i've been offered a pup which is why i asked. Whippet isn't a show pony, he's a working (coursing) dog. Greyhound is daughter to a Scottish Derby winner but the owner wont let her on the track. I might be tempted to give it a go and see what happens

the new rule states that you cannot breed a first cross ( first genaration ) whippet back to greyhound ie half greyhound x half whippet . this would on paper produce a 6/8 greyhound 2/8 whippet

also you cannot put a 2nd cross ( second genaration ) back to greyhound

ie 1/4 greyhound 3/4 whippet . this would produce a 5/8 greyhound and 3/8 whippet

3rd genaration is ok

ie 7/8 whippet 1/8 greyhound this on paper put to a greyhound would produce a 5/8 whippet and 3/8 greyhound

you can also put a 1/2 cross to a half cross this is ok this would produce a 4/8 greyhound 4/8 whippet or still 1/2 and 1/2

where the ruling goes wrong is that there are dogs that are clearly whippets but are second genaration ie 3/4 whippet weight from 16lb that cant under the new ruling mate a greyhound

and ther are dogs that are 3rd genaration ie 7/8 whippet that weigh 40lb plus that can be mated back to a greyhound :wacko: :x

Ok, so if you want to breed a big one get a good 40lb plus 3rd generation 7/8 non ped and mate it to a greyhound and hope that the big pups stay under the 55lb weight. Has anyone used this type of mating yet?

i understand pll,s have used too much greyhound in past 7/8ths ect,,,,,but what off the ones that have thrown to whippet side

as it stands right now,,, ill,have to sit at the side lines with a pup that 21inch probably less,,,and watch bigger ,,nearly twice her size run in bwra

belive it or not there,s still an very old school x whippet racers still alive and kicking from dundee / polbeth/ arbroath/kirkcaldy,ect ect ect,,,,some i have spooken to lately,,,,and they cant belive what there being told,,,,i can run my no limit,,so can the rest off family,,,,,but i cant run this wee tiny skinny pup,,,,they look at me in dis belive,,,and all say the same thing,,,,is the bwra hellbend in shooting themself in the foot turning dogs that could be in the whippet class

There are 2 options, someone puts forward a proposal to scrap the rule, or someone proposes a workable alternative.

Generally though, the smaller the dog, the more inbred it is. It makes sense to outcross those smaller dogs to a greyhound if you want to breed dogs for the handicap. Greyhounds do tend to throw larger litter numbers as well. Not so much arguing with you Gary, more my thoughts of what responses would be to a proposal put forward. :thumbsup:

and if was still alive would have been banned from mating greyhounds

I'm finding all this very interesting for a newbie starting out.

Apologies if this idea isn't workable or has been covered before but..................

Couldn't the BWRA set up a panel of people capable of assesing dogs for acceptance? What i mean is that they could physically go over a dog put forward by it's owner that is of non ped breeding & "is whippet like in appearance" but doesn't have the current essentials to enter BWRA races?

All current pedigree breeds started out like this and a standard was set to conform too. I know it's not quite the same as non peds are bred to race and not conform to a unified standard but there are plenty of correct size/weight/looks non peds that currently aren't eligible to register because on paper thier percentages are wrong or like mine there's no written pedigree of dogs recorded in thier background. I'm sure there would be others like myself & the original topic poster that also have dogs they would put forward for assesment based on the actual dog and not a piece of paper.

Accepting new blood from these dogs would help increase the gene pool as well.

at end off the day i can run derbys , clubs and i think nnwrf,,,,,so what is the bwra thinking off??? are they just going to be diffrent and stand out like a lemon ,,,and the rest dont follow
