Sneezing And Coughing

My Whippet started back last September(1 week after a visit to the the vets for a check up for his worming pills etc).

This also coincided with me switching on the central heating and changing washing powder - do you think it could be allergy, asthma or reverse sneezing?. His glands have also been swollen and have not gone down with anti-biotics.

He also has a hacking cough - for which I gave him cough medicine to no avail.

I have since been to the vets - 3 courses of anti-biotics to no avail

any suggestions

he has also has 2 anal abscesses - any links - any one who has either of these problems

Perhaps it's Kennel Cough. He could have picked it up at the vets :(

Been down the line of kennel cough - had meds for bronchial problems - still has the hacking cough like something stuck =- shakes his head, stands still nad uses his ribcage with soem force -

sometimes seems a little attention seeking?
 
I haven't got time now to reply fully to your message, but I will later as one of mine suffers from somehting similar. Has your dog has a KC vaccine up the nose?

No he hasn't - only ever had his first injections then never bothered after that and he's been fine - he's nearly 4 now
 
Sounds more like a virus, which will not be touched by ABs. There is a particularly virulent strain of bronchitis type virus going around humans at present, that presents as a chesty cough and sneezing and seems to go on for weeks. A lot of people are also saying that once they think they are over it they then get another bout!

It also sounds like his immune system has been knocked for six as his glands are up. Hopefully, you won't need to go the steroid route to get him better but I would certainly try giving him an immune boosting supplement. I used the Superdog Ultimate Nutrition for Aimee when she was 'unwell' with a virus last year and also Ronan had them when he got is bout of the itches in the Autumn. Both are fit as fleas ( (w00t) ) now!!

Funny you should say that Caroline, because although a human version has been going round a very nasty dog upper bronchial condition has been going round this area too.

Stanley only had a problem with his glands being up once in the few years he has had his coughing problem. This was only because I stopped all the steroids and the snot got worse and was infected and he had a raging temperature too.

The coughing sounds similar though, the hacking like something is stuck. Stan has been scoped but too no avail. After everything and lots of treatments etc etc the only thing that keeps it controlled is steroids (4mg every other day) and at least it doesn't get infected.

I went through all the washing powder, perfume, blankets allergy theory and yes his is somekind of allergy but will probably never find out what it is :(

If nothing touches it, perhaps a short course of steroids might be a suggestion and then see if it comes back. Hopefully it won't be a case of this but may be an option if nothing improves.

Stanley has been on all sorts of immune-boosting supplements but nothing has really helping. But is definitely a allergic-rhinitis type of condition. Which seems to be getting more common in whippets.

having read about reverse sneezing - i tried out covering his nostrils when he had an attack -worked a treat - it stopped the attack straight away. Just wish we could clear up the snotty nose
 
A dog near us [bulldog surreyarea] recently died from lung worm. Symptoms include coughing but it is easy to treat with wormer from the vets [panacur I think]

It is unusual but not unheard of in this country so vets dont think it is a problem.

Yes I have heard of a whippet which had similar symptoms and it turned out it was lungworm and Pancur is the wormer which works.
 
I'm so pleased to have found this thread. We've been worried to death about our poor old boy Tiffin. He's been reverse sneezing since November --got so bad and he was so distressed we even took him to the vet on Xmas day !

He's had ABs, steroids, endoscopy, examination of discharge etc etc and the vet can find nothing wrong. The worst thing is his distress ---- and the snot ---- to be blunt. I now have to take poo bags and rolls of tissue when we walk. The snot is foul. We've also been down the allergy route but no good.

A homeopathic remedy, Drosera, did help somewhat

Any ideas about ways to get him better would be greatly appreciated as Tiff is not so young anymore and the reverse sneezing fits seem to wear him out.

Bless him! it sounds to me like he needs further invertigation from a specialist. Maybe he has something like a grass seed stuck I think I would insist on a referal if he were mine

Spoke to vet about his lab results (Tiffin's ...not the vets !!!) and they were all negative again. We're going to put him on broadspectrum ABs for a month and also give him the doggy equivalent of Sudafed to try and decongest him a bit....so we'll see, but we can't go on like this. If none of the above works then they will do MRI, though it'll be hugely expensive I expect and the Insurance Co are already getting twitchy. :unsure:
 
lungworm seems to be becoming more of a problem, have heard of a few cases recently. may have hit the nail on the head there.

might sound daff ,but a friend stafford had a similar reaction when thay started using a shake n' vac type product in the house.

Shake n Vac stuff doesn't sound daft at all but I don't think that's our prob here: my daughter has asthma and I have all sorts of chemical sensitivities so we are very 'eco' and have hardly any nasty chemicals at home or perfumes. We've even changed the kind of coal we burn so there's not so much ash in the air for Tiffin. There's just no rhyme or reason to it.

I did mention lung worm to the vet but he was sceptical. However, if nothing else works I'll persist with that with him
