Sorry to say - but those photo's have made me feel really sad

What a lovely litter and such a good mum. I watched a programme yesterday about Canadian breeders of standard poodles. One of their brood bitches gave birth and once the puppies had fed, they were taken away from mum and put in an incubator. Mum was standing up one hind legs desperately trying to see into the incubator and get to her babies - such a shame. I know sometimes these things have to happen if there are problems but this was a healthy litter and a very attentive mum and was in the summer.

Can I assure you Silver and her puppies are living in comfortable, clean first class conditions and well looked after. She has 2 cushioned mats and a quilt in with her, and these are changed every day. She lies under a red infra red light also to give her heat all the time. She is walked every morning and has food in with her all day.The red light gives the wrong impression in the photographs, Silver scratches wholes all over her matts all of the time , this is what she likes to do. She would not lie in a vet bed. We have put it in with her and she threw it out again. it was to dangerous with the pups. Just because we do not fix Silver and her pups up for fancy photographs in fancy positions on fancy cushions, does not mean they are not comfortable. We take the photographs as it is in the real world. We are very proud of Silver, and her excellent breeding on both sides, and the puppy lines from this great breeding I have no doubt will all be true champions some day Please God.

Why do some people have to try and spoil what is such a special and precious time for you?

They do not know Silver like you do. You know what she likes and what makes her comfortable.

The infrared heatlamp does not make for pretty photos but it is lovely to see Silver and the pups at the early stage.

I am impressed that you do not disturb Silver and her pups more than is necessary.

I have seen pups only a day or two old picked up and handled for photographs on K9. It cannot be good for them.

I for one cannot wait to see pictures of the puppies in daylight but I admire your patience in letting Silver have as little disturbance as possible .

I have to disagree with you there, as long as the bitch is happy and content, handling the puppies does no harm whatsover...

It isn't my intention to 'spoil things'

The opening poster chose to put photographs onto a public forum.

We are in a culture of saying 'oooh lovely, beautiful litter etc etc' or if we don't think that, we tend to say nothing at all.

Every single breeder does things slightly differently and yes, we are all entitled to rear our puppies in the way we find acceptable and morally correct. I have seen many beautifully raised litters in person and unfortunately whilst at work, a couple of horrible ones.

Personally, our puppies are born into my hands and i am there to care for the bitch through every second of her labour and whelping. No way could i leave her to get on with it - what if one got stuck or she got into some other difficulty - yes i know what, she'd die. As the pups are born, i immediately know the sex because i am there. They are also checked over for any problems or defects. What if one had a cleft palate for example - if not checked it would be left to starve to death after a day or so. To me, in intentionally bred litters (ie. not the wild) that is inhumane. We then handle the pups very regularly. Again, this is my choice of what i think is right.

No, you are right that i don't know Silver . However, i do know by looking with my own eyes, that those pictures make me feel very sad. I could list a whole host of reasons why.

I reiterate - everyone has the individual choice how they raise a litter, but it doesn't mean that we all think it's wonderful. To be honest im shocked several people think this set up looks good.

Jok, I am guilty maybe of not explaining the whole birthing story to you. My husband sat with Silver, while every single pup was born and also had our local Vet down for 2 hours, who sat there to the last pup was born. Cost a lot of money,but we dident mind as long as Silver and pups are ok. We both work and cannot sit there 24/7. By the way JOK we are not breeders,1st litter of pedigree pups in 15 years and I treasure every one of them. Riley jumped the fence when we were at work and the rest is history

I must agree with Jok on some of the matters . It dosnt look overley warm in the kennel with the outside what appears to be just a few feet away, and it is October afterall Its the pups we have concerns about , we are afterall dog/whippet lovers as you know.

But one of my pet hates is the length of dogs nails , and the mothers seem so long . If you race her surely she should have nice short nails . ok so shes not raced for at leat 7/8 weeks but they are really long, dosnt take a min to sort out

I wish you well with the remaining pups. enjoy them , they grow so very fast
