Showing Big Whippets

is any one showing a big whippet in the uk and if so how is it doing

Assuming you are refering to height, my dog is 21".He isn't the tallest currently being shown.

Have you tried showing him ? Or,more to the point,do you wish to show him ?

Although 23 " sounds big,depending on his confirmation and colouring,he may not appear to be that big,what I'm trying to say is,judges may not think he is that big.

If you do want to show,it may be worth attending a few shows,and seeing if your dog (if entered) would appear huge next to his contempories.

Although our breed standard suggests/states that dogs maximum height is desirable at 20",some judges would treat his height the same as any other fault.If he is otherwise a good example,he could be penalised slightly (or a lot) for that,but still be placed because he has elegance,sound confirmation and movement.

Have you been to any shows to watch? That could give you an idea of how different handlers show their dogs.

What breeding is your whippet?

23" is big. You are measuring the height of the wither in a straight line to the floor, aren't you? Stand him next to a wall, place a book on his wither (or anything else that will give you right angle to the wall) , make a mark and you should have an accurate measurement. If you just place an end of tapemeasure on his wither and take it to the ground you are adding an inch or more to his height!

I thought Rebel was a 'big' whippet, at local open shows he seemed massive compared to the amount of Nimrodels and Cornstalk that are shown up here, but having observed others at champ shows he isnt too big. Isnt it just down to what breeding they are?

Diamond on the other hand is at the other end of the scale, but not too bothered as she is about the same size as others local to me and is a good size for my daughter for Junior Handling :thumbsup:

IMO Rebel's size is masculine, whereas Diamond is small and very feminine and graceful, i personally dont particularly like bitches that look big and muscular :blink:
