This is a poo question, not an exercise one. Leave it til later if you are eating...

Ros and Grover are 5 months old now. When they 'go' in the morning, their poo is normal healthy poo (Good God I'm already grossing myself out. :x ) however by their evening walk they are both what my dear old Gran would have called 'loose' and my son calls 'squits..!". Put it this way, there's no way you could pick it up without a Vax.

They are still on 3 meals a day (James Wellbeloved kibble complete) I've tried feeding them veg/ pasta leftovers for their evening meal and it made no difference. They do eat chewing gum they find on walks and it's nigh on impossible to stop them and I also suspect they eat their own poo in the garden if I miss some.....

Any suggestions? It's getting horrible on the evening walks as I clearly can't pick up after them and don't like people looking at me like I'm a bad dog owner. :(

try moving over to the raw diet , poos are much firmer and loads healthier for the dog , some running breeds do go loose when adrenaline is high ?

i have a 6 1/2 month lurcher pup, and have the same problem, i found that feeding her the superdog greyhound and lurcher complete mix has helped a great deal, she used to pinch the terrier's baker's and she had the runs everytime so i have to feed them seperately. i also cut down the bonio's to one a day. one of my friends told me that a lot of complete dog food has gluten in the food and some dogs are more sensative than others, how true this is i dont know?if you or any one else has any ideas to this i would love to know,my terrier's eat anything so never came across this problem before,i agree though its not nice trying to get it in a pooh bag!

usually all mine will produce what i call a excited poo :- when where on our walks, all the other times there fine

what are you feeding your dogs in the raw diet meat wise? and are you adding any biscuits?sorry if i come across as thick newbe!

starting to feed pasta&veg wouldn't improve the runs since they need time to adapt to a new diet anyways, similary you'd expect loose poos when changing straight over from one kibble to another.

maybe try adding a bit of cooked rice in their diets and cut out the pasta&veg, the rice should, ahem, firm things up a bit.

Mine do this as well, i think its because they squeeze it out

because its what they think they should be doing......if you

know what i mean

Mine are raw fed by the way.

No Hely, it's true...they do do 'excited poos' (w00t) At racing or lure coursing for example. They can do a normal poo before they leave home. We travel 10 mins down the road to the racing club, turn off the main road and they know where they're going, get out of the car and excited poo away :teehee:  :clown:

They can do a normal poo at home, we go ten minutes down the road to a field and they get out of the car and do more normal poos 8)

As previously said it's all down to the adrenaline levels

Mine are also fed completely BARF and generally have very firm, small, hardly smelling poos. However, get them on the racing field and they definitely loosen up lol!

trust hely to lower the tone :x

Loose poo (in any species) is caused by the digestive system working too fast so anything you can feed to slow it down will help, ie rice.

When the adreneline levels are higher, their heart rate rises and bodily functions speed up :D so loose poo is a natural result

It does sound as though Ros and Grover are exceptionally loose tho' so if you could consider introducing them to a raw diet I think you'll find it will help tremendously  :luck:

Thanks for all these replies. Have given them rice this evening and will do for a few days, see how it goes. They also have carrots every other day as well to help with teething. Not sure about the barf diet. Have read lots of stuff on it but the overriding impression that sticks is from vet nurses/ owners who've seen dogs with ruptures caused by bones. :( Also, I have enough on my plate feeding my kids (one has Asperger's and has a very limited diet and needs loads of support in other ways too). Not sure I could face preparing even more meals, much as I love my dogs, although I suppose changing one meal a day would be doable. If I did this, what would people recommend as the evening meal?

The adrenaline thing could be working as well - hadn't thought of that. They went to training class last night, it was very busy and chaotic, and poor Grover, normally very forward, actually weed himself a bit so they could be stressed. Just seems odd it only happens in the evenings, though, they shouldn't really be stressed/ excited most evenings. Grover has been strongly objecting to being crated lately and we have more or less made the decision to let them sleep on the beds from now on. They slept on my son's double bed last night and have been really calm and content all day after a nice lie in - normally they get up at 6.30 when my husband gets ready for work. Could also be their teeth I suppose - babies get the runs when they are teething, don't they?

I think that it is a bit of a myth that raw feeding is time consuming - it takes me next to no time to feed mine.

This morning they had 5 chicken wings each.

And for their tea they have had a bag of lamb mince, handful of wholemeal mixer and some veggies left over from our dinner.

Id go easy on the raw carrots as they do not digest them and if swolled in large pieces can cause an opstruction

Mine how ever do tend to `nick `them from the rabbits and Gpigs

When we're out for walks Django seems to feel the need to forcably empty his bowels. It starts off perfectly firm and normal, but then he starts to force it and as he poos more and more (he normally does about 3... I always have my pockets full of bags!) it gets looser and looser until you can't pick it up. Not that this is particularly helpful, I just thought I'd add to the grossness to make Ros and Grover feel better... they aren't on their own! :x

Tip for clearing up runny poo ...........

Carry a washing up bottle full of water and squirt it onto the runny poo to dissolve it completely :D

That way you don't have to worry about picking it up and you have cleaned up after your dog! Sorted!!!!!
