Hi all

Has anyone had a puppy who had retained teeth, i.e. when an adult tooth grows in the same place as the baby tooth before the baby tooth has fallen out?

My whippet pup has a definite case of lower canine adult teeth growing on the INSIDE of the baby tooth, whilst the baby tooth is still firmly in place (and the baby teeth don't even feel wobbly). I've read that this is bad and I've made an appointment with the vets which is in half an hour's time. But I just wondered if anyone had any experience with this? Does this always end in extraction?

Thanks

All my dogs have had this happen with some off their teeth. At the moment Rolo is having issues with his canine baby tooth still there and adult pushing in at the same time. Mine all came out eventually and the vet said its perfectly normal.:)

Thank you. Together with the vet's opinion this puts my mind at rest. I went to the vet and she said that all four baby canines are being retained whilst the adults are growing through. She said I could make another appointment to check up on it if I wanted to, but she said that it happens a lot, and that it means they'll remove her baby canines at the same time that she is neutered.

It's a bit confusing. When I look at her teeth, the baby lower canines are in the proper place, sitting just outside of the top gum so they don't clash with anything on the top jaw. And because the adult canines are growing on the INSIDE of the baby canines, they are therefore going to grow straight up into the palate. The vet seemed to think this wasn't a problem. I'm not sure why! The internet seems to think this means that they'll cut her palate. But I guess I'll just have to see...

No problem x
Rolo has had an adult canine pushing through at the top for a while (baby tooth still in place) and its driving him crazy poor soul cant wait for that to fall out! All my boys were the same, such a horrid time for them teething but they will both get there
