Rescue Dog.housetraining Problems.

Our dog Gillie is a seven year old rescue.She is sweet natured and affectionate

and a pleasure to have around.We have had her for two weeks now and even though she is taken out just before bedtime she still does her business in the home at night.We know that she was with an elderly couple who could not take her out.

She always does it on newspaper.

She will go outside during the day but only off the lead.This was ok at first as she returned when called but the last couple of days she has run away so we have had to resort to a long lead and she is reluctant to go.Any advice please.Denise.

for a start id not put newspaper down anymore at night , this may be actually encouraging her to soil at night .

as for the running off it is obvious that she now feels more confident , id just work a lot on her recall in the house / garden and on the long lead :thumbsup:

look in the F.A.Q section for help with recall etc :thumbsup:

Having taken quite a few non-housetrained rescues over the years I sympathise - if she has been used to going on newspaper indoors it can be a difficult habit to break. A few things I've found helpful:

It might be worth going back to basics for a while, as though you were housetraining a puppy - so take her outside every couple of hours, stay with her and praise like mad and reward when she does her stuff in the garden.

It can be useful to teach a 'toilet' command, by using the word and rewarding when she goes outside, so when you let her out last thing at night she knows what is expected of her.

Some people find using a crate at night can help, as dogs generally don't like to soil their sleeping area.

If you feed your dog in the evening it might also help to feed earlier in the day for a while so she is more likely to 'go' before you go to bed.
