Hi I have a healthy white with black marking male whippet puppy. I’ve noticed over the last couple of weeks he’s getting black spots on his skin on his back. Is this normal? He isn’t itching and they don’t seem to bother him. Does it warrant a trip to the vets?

Can you post pictures?

Hi Joanne photos below, thank you

Are they completely flat patches of pigmentation? I'm wondering it they are what is sometimes termed 'naughty spots' - have a look at this thread: Naughty spots - Lurcher Link

In some dogs they're more noticeable in summer, but I dare say they may develop gradually in pups - actually, damatian pups are born without spots so that would make sense.

Bear in mind that this is pretty much guesswork as it's not possible to see what's going on in the photo - if you have any concerns, do check with your vet.

Hello thank you both for your help, it’s pointed me towards ‘ticking’ which is blacks spots developing under white fur, looking at photos that’s exactly what it looks like

Hi they definitely look like ticking to me my oldest Marley has them and usually gets more in the summer.

Hi thank you feel more confident now that’s it’s nothing to worry about

Hi not sure if this is a good picture but you can see Marley's on his legs.
