Puppy Insurance - When to start it?

Hi All,

Looking for advice..

Our puppy Sonny is currently 6 ish weeks, he is having his first jab on Saturday 22nd August 2020 and then staying with the breeder until 8 weeks. I will be picking him up at 8 weeks old and having his second jab on the same day.

When shall I start the insurance from? Should I start from the 22nd August incase he has any reactions to the the jab, or from the day I pick him up and he is in my care?

I'm not really sure on how insurance works too, so what are the best plans?

Most insurances have a two week exclusion period at the start so I'd start it straight away. Your puppy may come with a month's insurance, a lot of insurance companies do this in the hope new owners decide its easier to just stay with then.

The insurance I have is immediate for accident and has 1 month wait for illness. Plus it pays out some money for vaccines. So depending on the terms of the insurance you are looking at, might be best to start it earlier rather than later.

I live in Switzerland, so my insurance (Animalia) is no good to you... but all are similar. Surely the breeder is paying for his first jab? Maybe a comparison site can help you choose the best insurer/policy?

Can I just add that the type of cover can be important. Lifetime cover means that conditions are covered for life - if you don't have that, and your dog develops a life long condition such as diabetes for example, cover for that condition would stop at the next renewal.

Thanks for your advice. I Managed to get cover for him through PetPlan, lifetime cover. The cover starts from the day is he is home. Thanks for your advice and help

Tiree is our third dog and the only one we've taken insurance on. I'm so glad we did because at nine months he was bitten by an adder and the treatment he needed would have run to thousands which we couldn't afford. We are with Denplan and we've found them very good to deal with.

It's not easy to get the antivenom and it's very expensive. The vet said they could get it by courier from Glasgow if we wanted, but we agreed he wasn't too badly affected so we didn't bother. He was kept in overnight the first night for observation, given painkillers, antibiotics and antihistamine ( is that the one to reduce swelling?). He was bitten on the elbow and his leg swelled up quite badly as well as the necrosis which looks horrible like a big black bruise, but other than that he was quite happy and unconcerned.
