Dear all,

Firstly I love this forum. so friendly.

Just wanted to post some encouragement to new puppy parents experiencing puppy blues!

Hang on in there.

7 weeks ago when we got our new 11 week old rescue puppy home, I seriously wondered what on earth I had done. The sleep deprivation, the natural pup behaviour, the sudden loss of freedom, the constant loo trips. I actually sat and cried in despair! Not afraid to admit it.

He's now nearly 18 weeks. Its still tiring, BUT, things feel soooo much better now. He's toilet trained, a routine is slowly emerging and now I look back and wander how I ever felt like this. If this is you, you are not alone. Hang on in there, don't be afraid to ask for help. Over time things DO come together more.

I'm glad you are enjoying the forum, we do try to keep it a friendly place.

And thank you for the update, things definitely get easier when you get a routine going, don't they.

Thank you for the update! So pleased you and pup are finding your own level now.

You have his adolescence to come - don't be daunted - we are always here to support. Meanwhile, do enjoy his puppyness. It's a very special time.

Thanks so much! Yes, I'm braced for adolescence! I think what you said is so true, enjoy the puppyness. I think we spend so long worrying about whether we are doing the right thing, we forget the puppy months go so quick, and forget to enjoy a lot of it! Thanks x
 
I empathise. Was in the same position four years ago with a rescued three year old whippet. Wouldn’t come near me, anxious in the car to throwing up. I doubted my sanity but we did there in the end - Mabel’s a very happy and secure seven year old. Something of a daddy’s girl. Wouldn’t be without her. We just let her have her own space and time.

Yes, 'hang on in there' is very good advice for anyone with a new pup!

Thank youJudyN ( He) Teddy is his name! Mum was a spaniel, dad possibly pom. Mum was given up by breeder. He's heinz 57 varieties I think, but much loved.
 
He certainly is a striking looking dog; very handsome.
 
I don't know why I thought he was a she - sorry Teddy!

Yes, so far so good. However, I’m deliberating giving up the puppy class. He gets upset there and overstimulated. I feel it’s counter productive. I think I’ll post my concerns on another thread and get feedback x
 
For what it’s worth, the experience I’ve had with such mass classes, haven’t produced better results than I’ve achieved on a 1:1 basis. With a previous whippet rescue, Poppy, she was overwhelmed in the company of other dogs. Although recognised by the ‘trainer’ it wasn’t taken into account by the other owners. When it was time to leave she was more than happy to go. I should add that we found Pops on the side of the road in Herefordshire. According to the vet she was about six months old and, in the opinion of experienced sight hound owners, abandoned by travellers. She was frightened of other dogs apart from sighthounds and it seemed evident that she’d been bullied. She was more than happy to be ‘trained’ on a 1:1 basis. The same goes for our current rescue, Mabel. She was not happy in a mass class - the trainer was fine but her assistant was on constant transmit - talking at us rather than letting us get on with it with our dogs which WE knew. The one size fits all approach doesn’t work whether it’s training or socialising (my opinion). Just keep Teddy happy in your zone - he’s very young. Hope it goes well. If I got there with Mabel anything’s possible.

Thanks so much ! Sounds like you have worked so hard for your pups. I agree entirely with all your comments. 1 size does not fit all. Teddy is very sociable and friendly. Like you said, I think 1-1 will benefit him far much more.
