what is considered to be best age for traing puppies 4 5 6 months ihave even heard about pups running the bends at 8 month i knoww all dogs get trained differantly does the weather make a big differance phil
hi phil it all depends on the size of your pups. the smaller ones generally start schooling a bit earlier. I think 4 5 and even 6 months may be a bit soon. This is just my opinion mind. Personally I like a pup to have plenty free running before learning it to chase and I dont normally start this until the pup is about 8 months I know they can race in an open at 8 months in the pups but personally I think their bones are still growing and they are still developing at 8 months. Like I say I generally start schooling at 8 months starting with hand slipping short distances chasing the lure gradually working up to the full distance of the track. I think 8 months to be on the bends is far too young greyhounds dont start training on the bends till they are about 15 months. This is all just my opinion it will be interesting to hear other peoples views. Are you new to whippet racing Phil? What are your dogs racing names and where do you race?
It depends on the dog, some have the legs together at a very young age some need more time ...i generally don't start mine off behind a lure till there about 8 months ....later if there big ghd / crossers
hi sherry, i suppose i am fairly new to whippet racing 6 years or so my dogs name is black magic the litter sister to demo blue we run at east ayrshire ,black magic was covered by shooting star last year got six pups which are about 4 months now we kept 1 she has never been near the track yet , i am excited about all these pups i think its interesting breeding phil.
Hiya phil I do not start my pups off behind a lure untill i know they are ready, some pups are further advanced than others....fancy free was racing in puppy opens at 8 month but she was a natural  and i have had other pups that have not been ready untill 10 months of age......hope top see you all soon.....Pat
