 Every time i come on this site at the mo im getting loads of pop ups asking me to download stuff and its impossible to enjoy any of the posts and its REALLY annoying!!!!!!

I try closing them but whenever i click on a subject they keep bombarding me again.

Does anyone know how I can stop this happening???

Cheers Neil.

You need to get a pop-up blocker. Some are free, the better ones cost $$. I have AdsGone and get NO pop-ps or banner ads on this site! Most will let you download a free trial...

you need a popup blocker you might be abel to download on freeif you have a search on the net

If you dont want pop-ups use a pop-up stopper and avoid IE

I use Netscape 7.01 but this is no longer available. Try mozilla (which Richard prefers) or opera. in fact use anything BUT IE

For email I use eudora rather than OE much safer.

I got the new Nortons Internet Security and it includes a pop-up-stopper. Before that I was using a free one of the internet called POPNOT. I found this worked really well - was easy to use, and didn't keep begging you to buy the full version. The free version did everything I wanted.

Can I just ask are the pop-ups grey - very basic looking boxes or are they just normal in your face colourful pop-ups?

LasVagasNo1 they are kinda grey with a blue surrounding with Internet Explorer and Security and other stuff. I only seem to have a problem on this site and i've noticed it keeps login me off too  I get about 5 continuous pop ups every new screen i go onto.

Thanks for all your suggestions I still haven't fixed it yet :(

I think those are the ba**ards that are pre-programmed into your PC  but the good news is they CAN be turned off. We had this problem a while back. I will have a look to see if I can remember how to turn them off and get back to you. Please bare with me I can be very slow at this sort of thing ;)

Think you could be correct LVNo1, if you can tell us how to sort it out that would be great.

No woriies if it takes you a while :D ;)

Right I found the info - let's just hope it works :sweating:

Block Messenger Pop-up Spam

Ever gotten a grey pop-up titled Messenger Service? Chances are it was a messenger pop-up -- a new kind of spam that targets PCs running Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP.

To turn off the setting in Windows that allows these pop-ups just follow the simple steps below relative to your version of Windows, then change your settings if you're vulnerable. A message will appear on your screen when it's done.

Note: Before starting the fix ensure that your PC is not networked with other computers as disabling this feature of the operating system may break programs that rely on internal networking. Most home users will be unaffected.

Turn off messenger pop-ups now!

1. To disable Windows Messenger Service click Start > Run

2. Type services.msc /s

3. In the Services window, scroll down to locate Messenger.

4. Right click on the word Messenger and select Properties.

5. Click the General tab

6. In the Start up panel field, click the down arrow and select Disabled. Just below in Service Status, click on the Stop button. This will stop the process, and setting to disabled will stop the service running next time Windows is restarted.

To re-Enable:

Follow the above steps, but change the Startup type to "Automatic," then click "Apply," then click "Start" under Service Status.

Note:

You must be logged on as an Administrator for the automatic fix to work.

Neil, have you spotted the google adds at the bottom of this page. They are all for pop-ups,bet you could download a free trial version to stop them.

I installed Norton Internet Security last year.I would like to recomend them,I certainly don't get pop-ups.But, I am having other hassles,so would not recomend them to anyone anymore.

I would certainly recommend AOL - it has pop-up blocker - works like a dream!

Cheers for everyones suggestions on trying to rid my computer of these bloody pop ups  .

I've come on here this morning and so far so good :D

Not sure why they have gone but just hope they stay away!!!

 Neil.

K9 has no pop ups or unders or anything else (just targetted google ads :) ) 8) But... there are many sites that do & once you (or the people who last used your IP address) have visited a site that has these 'advertising' tools you can contiue to get them for a while. It depends on whether you are on broadband or not & how often your IP address changes. There are loads of free pop up eliminators available - here are just a few.

To get rid of logged ad sites that are causing the pop ups try typing adaware into your search bar download the free programme and it will clear them all from your computer I run it about once a month it's suprising how many it finds.
