Poor Go With The Flow

Just seen this..good luck with Flo and sending lots of healing thoughts your way

ive been in the same situation with my Peggy she had damaged her spinal cord resulting being paralysed in her hind legs on the coursing field...this was almost two years ago....yes she never be 100%and just on friday has had her toe amputated

After coming out of the vets , she was walking with a sling and took a while for her to paralysing from the neck down and shes walking and leading a quality of life

yes it is a 24 hr nursing and lots of tlc and luck..if you need to have a chat plz pm me

Lesley a member on here has a bitch called sienna and she was also paralysed from the neck and she now leading a quality of life
 
Kay & Rob, my thoughts are with you and Flo :wub: If there is anything at all I can find out for you, then please let me know, although I expect the vets you are going to are providing you with all you need to know.

Kay & Rob we are sending lots of healing thoughts to poor Flo. We can only imagine what you must be going through, & we hope & pray for a speedy & full recovery. :flowers:
 
Sorry to hear poor Flo has been injured. Hope she makes a good recovery. Our Duster had a ruptured disc in his neck and had to have an operation at the AHT to remove it. He was 8 at the time but recovered well and although his movement was never 100% again, he lived quite happily till he was 14.
 
Has anyone heard how flo is :)) there phone is always busy :blink:
 
Just an update on Flo (yes, Elaine did eventually manage to get through to us!)

Three days on we are all a little calmer now I think and trying to get into some kind of routine. Flo has been very sleepy today and I think the effects of the last few days have caught up with her a bit, - though she does perk up a lot when food is around! :) Today when I did her physio there was some good news, I saw two muscle spasms in her right hind leg and as I stretched and flexed her foot I actually felt her push back against me, - you have no idea how much that lifted our spirits!

Although she has slept a lot today I have also seen that same right leg move a little when she was dreaming, so there is hope yet, - you have to start somewhere. The left leg is the weaker one and has shown no change as yet, the vet says that if and when she does get to walk again she will probably always have a bit of a wobble at her back end (the way I see it, when we get to a certain age we all have wobbly bits so what the heck!) We are just overjoyed to see ANY signs of improvement.

When I take her in the garden with the sling to support her, her back feet are still knuckling under, though when we place them correctly she will hold that position and sometimes it even feels like she is putting just a slight amount of weight on them but of course I am always supporting her. Bladder control seems a little better now too.

So all in all, little positive signs, on one side at least. She still looks hopefully that her collar and lead will appear when Rob takes the other two out, but we try to compensate with a special 'treats time'. My heart goes out to her, - she is working with us as much as she can, the rest is just up to her, and time and patience.

:luck: Lots of luck and good vibes coming from our household. Its so encouraging when you can see little signs of improvement, I remember how it was with Ozzy :( hang on in there, you are doing a great job :huggles:
 
im soo pleased for you and FLO...This will certainly take time but as theres been improvement so far im sure she'l make a complete recovery even if she walks with a wobble...just makes sure she has plenty of rest even if she thinks otherwise

Peggys R hind has always been the weaker leg and took alot longer for her to use...poor thing was wearing her toe and nail away as she was dragging it with every step she took

just take a day at a time...shes been so brave

All sounds positive and moving in the right direction. What great news! Keep up the physio to keep the joints supple. As a physio I used to go into my vet to help with passive movements and standing practice for the dogs with spinal injuries. My vet specialises in discectomies. I have helped dogs from min dachsies to a great dane to stand. Many went on to rehab well in a swimming pool to re-educate the muscles and allow easier movement.

So sorry to hear about Flo's injury Kay and Rob, you must have been completely beside yourselves when it happened. i am very glad that she is showing signs of improvement and it is very early days. I will be thinking of you all and wish you the best of luck with her. Remember to take care of yourselves too :flowers:

Flo has been a bit shivery and shaky today, - not been sure what to think, then, just now as she sat in her bed I couldn't believe my eyes, - she lifted her right back leg a little way and tried to scratch her nose! (w00t) Not too acurate it has to be said but aimed in the general direction at least and MOVEMENT!! On the one side anyway. .... That just made my day! :)

aww that's great, she must be trying her best, you'll have to remember to stratch her nose a bit for her every now & then incase she's too tired !

These little movements are so incouraging...im really pleased...you wait until she waggs that tail of hers you think youve won the lottery...she'l be walking before you know it... Go Flo

Peggy still cant itch her nose standing with her R hind even now...she just looks at me to say'mum please give me a scratch'
 
That's fantastic news Kay & Rob... and to think it only happened 4 days ago - that is really positive! :thumbsup:
 
Well, we sat out in the garden today. Flo went out to spend a penny and despite only travelling on two legs made it quite clear that she wished to detour to the patio, where they usually sit out in the sun. So we had two lots of physio out there and listened to the birds singing and the leaves rustling. As you can guess I'm not getting much else done at the moment. :) The other two decided that they wanted to come out too so we ended up with three dog beds out there, as Macy had her eye on getting into Flo's bed with her, which wouldn't have been a good idea!

Still no movement from the left hind leg but the right side continues to show improvement and she has stretched her right back leg out behind her (while lying down) a couple of times today and flexed her toes. Also, when I hold her up in her sling in the garden I am sure now that she is taking some weight on that right foot, though because the left leg isn't functioning she eventually tilts over towards it so I have to keep my leg along one side of her as well as holding her up. Still very sleepy, but not as shaky today (sounds a bit like me really), however, she was awake enough to have a bark at a couple of dogs walking through the woods behind us, including a very loud bark at one that she particularly doesn't like! :wacko:

One strange aside to the situation is that in the abscence of their 'play supervisor' Flo, little doddery old Ellie and mad bouncy Macy seem to have 'chummed up' together. What an odd little duo they make tottering round the garden together exploring, while Flo keeps a watchful eye on them from her bed. I think there has been a bit of a change in group dynamics!

Can't believe we were chasing balls in the fields this time last week, but it's no use looking backwards, at least she seems to be moving forwards just a tiny bit each day.

Thanks so very much for all your positive posts and pm's and for everyones interest and advice, which has been so helpful and supportive when we needed it, - you are such a great bunch. Sorry I can't reply to everyone but I can only really get upstairs to the computer in the evening when Rob gets back as I don't dare leave Flo on her own right now, but rest assured you have all helped us a great deal over the last few days. :huggles:

Sometimes I look at her sleeping in her bed and she looks almost 'normal', - just perfect, but I know we are a long way from that yet. I just pray that we will be able to see her stand up unaided one day and, best of all, to to take her out, even for a short walk, - but for now, stretching that leg will do fine. :)
