Pancreatitis and splenectomy :(

Hello. I posted on here 2 weeks ago about my beautiful Cocker Spaniel, Archie, who was miserable with a Hot Spot at the time.
Things went from bad to worse as he stopped eating and drinking and was clearly in pain. He was admitted to the vet hospital a week ago with pancreatitis. During a scan to look at the pancreas, they also found that he had a tumour in his spleen and removed the spleen immediately. So he's not only trying to recover from major surgery but also cope with pancreatitis. He stayed in the hospital on a drip for 5 days and is now home - I always knew he wouldn't cope well in hospital and he was extremely stressed and very depressed in there and refused to eat but started eating a bit when he came home. I've been able to get meds down him orally (very tricky but I'm managing at the moment). He's on 2 lots of antibiotics and omeprozole.
He seemed brighter at home but today he has gone downhill again. Clearly nauseous (drooling, which he's been doing for a week), very lethargic, sometimes shaky and I see pain in his eyes. The vets said Archie didn't need pain relief medication or anti-sickness medication but I'm thinking I should ring them to ask for some and wondered if anyone can advise? I'm scared to call the vet though as I don't want him readmitted unless absolutely necessary as he'll get depressed and stressed again.

I would ring the vets straight away and tell them about him being in pain and your worries about him being readmitted. They may be able to come up with something that means he can stay at home but is still getting correct veterinary care.

My beagle had pancreatitis and I know how much pain he had so Im really surprised that the vet hasnt offered you something.

So was I, that’s why I asked them twice. He was taken off morphine on Wednesday and off strong painkillers on Friday when we brought him home. I just want them to prescribe pain relief that I can just go and pick up. He’s eating and drinking at home but refuses to in the hospital. It was awful to see him so very depressed in there.

Oh, what a shame. I hope the vet is more sympathetic to his plight when you get a call back. Fingers crossed tightly for a swift and full recovery.

I rang again and the vet is calling me in about 20 minutes after her last consultation. Meanwhile, Archie has had a bit more food and seems a little more comfortable. Yes fingers crossed indeed. Thank you xx

That’s great, hopefully they’ll do their job. It’s horrible to see your dog in pain and it makes you feel so helpless. Hope Archie is back to himself soon.

This is awful , is so sad to know that they are in pain. The vets do know what they are doing but if his is suffering again tonight or tomorrow ring the vets. Try and keep water down him as him being dehydrated will only make things worse. Hope he recovers quickly.

He’s more relaxed and chilled on the painkillers. Just hope I can still get his antibiotics down him tonight while he’s feeling a bit spaced out. Good news is that he’s drinking well at home, sometimes needs my encouragement - I’m very conscientious of lack of fluids.

I had to ring the vets when I got back home after collecting the painkillers as Archie vomited while I was out (husband was with him). Vet said don’t panic at this point as he hasn’t vomited for 7 days but if he’s vomiting tomorrow and/or is still not picking up, I will ring them again.
