Hi, I'm looking for an older (6-12 mths or more) male Whippet pup to give a loving home to following the untimely passing away of my much beloved GSD X. My dog walker (I work during the week) suggested I go for a whippet as she has owned them and my research has confirmed this. Since my last was a rescue and had many behavioural issues I would ideally want one I could socialise myself, that would possibly have a cat companion so would get on with cats and children. I have done a LOT of internet trawling so far and would really appreciate any suggestions?

YOU MIGHT BE BETTER POSTING ON NON-PED WHIPPET RACING FORUM AS WELL

:luck:

Hi and welcome to k9

Good luck in your search for older puppy :luck:

Perhaps it might help if you give a few more details, about yourself,a secure garden?dog or bitch?how far are you willing to travel to get one?and any other important details-someone then might be able to help you

a charity called MANY TEARS have got 3 x 8 month old dogs might be worth giving them a go.

Of course. I am based in north london (near the open spaces of Hampstead Heath) and I do have a secure garden. I would be willing to travel to find the right dog (it is a dog rather than a bitch I would be wanting). The dog would have time with me and my partner in the mornings, evenings and weekends and full day care with company with other dogs with what can only properly be referred to as the dog 'nanny' during the week. I spoke to a breeder who seemed to take issue with this arrangement but it worked incredibly well with my previous dog who got more time, attention and care than most! Essentially I can provide a very warm, loving home, with good training and a regular routine and I want to find the right doggy companion that can perhaps fill the space left since poor old Mish passed away.

I,m very sorry about your sad loss :( I hope you find the right dog :luck: there are sadly lots of older ones needing loving homes like yourselves

I think some breeders can be too picky! It sounds like a reasonable compromise to me bearing in mind you work full time (as do many of us on this board). Anyway, I'm not looking to start a debate on your behalf :)

Good luck :luck:

I was one of the breeders that this lady spoke to.

I think that she would provide a wonderful home, she has obviously done her research and deserves to get a wonderful whippet. I am sure a lively non-dominant male would love this situation with the doggy day care and plenty of activities with the sitter and the other dogs while she is out.

The only issue I would have in parting with an older puppy is this. I feel that a dog of 6 months that is used to doggy companions to cuddle up to might not be so happy being a singleton. I do sell older puppies (6-8 months) but nearly always to homes where there is another dog or a dog loving cat. I find that the best suited to being "only ones" are usually "people oriented" males. So I would say. Look very carefully at the temperament of your future friend.

Good Luck in your search I will be keeping my eyes open for you. :luck:

Cathie

Thank you so much Cathie. It was on your recommendation that I joined this site and I have had some very positive responses as a result. I want to make clear to everyone that it was NOT you to whom I was referring, but unfortunately the second breeder who in fact reduced me to tears by saying that while the previous arrangement may have worked with my previous dog (apparently due to the fact he was a GSD ??!!) it would not work with a whippet, and that in her opinion she didn't think I could offer a decent environment for a dog and she questioned my motivations for even wanting a dog if I was working full time. I understand breeders (as you did Cathie) need to be rigorous in their selection of future homes and ask a lot of questions but this woman completely wrote me off without even giving me a chance, and even worse was in fact very insensitive and rude. She was also way off the mark. She actually said that the best I could do was to try rescue kennels because the dogs are grateful for whatever home they can get (implying mine wasn't up to much) but she said she doubted that even they would think I was a suitable home. I have to say I was in absolute shock and how wrong she was- if she could see how many cards of condolances I received on behalf of poor Mish she would realise how loved he was by the entire doggy and non doggy community in my neighbourhood and how many people knew about his problem beginnings and difficult ends. It is a shame she saw it fit to speak to me in that way because it was actually quite heartbreaking to listen to and needless to say has made me more reluctant to make those phone calls!

How awful to be spoken to like that  You can understand a breeder asking alot of questions, but to be rude like that is out of order,i hope you are not put off, there are some nice breeders out there, that care where there babies go and have a polite manner.

I'm sure breeders like this are in the minority (at least I hope so). I feel quite vexed on your behalf. It's fine being asked a lot of questions about your situation, and many situations won't conform to a breeder's idea of the perfect home, but it wouldn't hurt them to be polite about it and ask if you're willing to make some changes/or listen to your justifications with an open mind. Why humiliate the caller?

Sorry...I've been there myself, so I know how you're feeling.

Anyway...I honestly don't want to turn this into a debate and hijack your post. I'm pleased Cathie has endorsed your search.....that means a lot I would say :b

Thanks for this! Unfortunately, as much as I would love a pack of dogs I can only take one at present. Thanks for keeping me in mind though
