Hi all, I have a Jack Russell Pug Cross who is 6 months old now. We are still having issues with her pooing in the night, she seems to go a week without doing it but then goes a few days in a row where she is doing it every night, she never asks to go out either. She is walked around 9.00 pm and then let out again before bed but not sure what else to do?

Any advice greatly appreciated. TIA.

Where does she sleep at night? Having her in a crate (which you'll need to accustom her to first) by your bed might help as (a) you'll be able to hear if she gets restless and (b) dogs don't usually like to soil their bed. Also, what time do you feed her, and do you know around what time she poos overnight. Sometimes, changing the timing of the last meal helps - so if, say, you feed her at 5pm and she poos at 4am, if you feed her at 8pm she might not need to poo till 7am. Similarly, an earlier meal might mean she's ready to poo before going to bed.

Also, if she is on a food with a lot of filler in the shape of grain, then changing her to a grain-free or raw diet might reduce the total number of poos which will mean she's more likely to go through the night.

I second that about the crate, I used one with my jack when she was a puppy and it was brilliant, made toilet training an absolute breeze!

my pup unfortunately was pooping in the crate when we got her, we
had to change the material she was sleeping on before she stopped.
i think she'd associated the mat she had with a toilet!
