Hi I’ve been looking after a 13 month old whippet. She is lovely and is beginning to bond with my ancient Bichon
We would love to keep her as her owner doesn’t want her but is it fair to leave her 6 hours 4 days a week while I work? With her owner she is crated a lot and not given any affection although she is very well looked after.
We adore her and she loves us but which is better for her to be in a household where she is loved and left with my old dog while I work he is used to being left .Or give her back where she won’t get the love and affection she do deserves.I’m so torn atm. I will walk them both am and my husband takes them out every evening for a good run for at least an hour.Advice needed please.

Some dogs are OK with being alone for that long - and of course she will have your Bichon for company - and others aren't. If she isn't happy being left, or struggles to go so long without toileting, would you be able to get a dog walker/sitter to pop in once a day to give her a chance to toilet and maybe a quick game or bit of fuss? If so, I@m sure she'll be better off with you than with people who don't even want her.

Oh, and if you do take her on, make sure you get something in writing from the existing owner - the last thing you want is for her to settle in with you and then the original owner wants her back. I'm not sure what you'd need to cover yourself legally, but hopefully someone else will.

Good luck.

My thoughts are with you. We’ve had three rescued whippets - one (female) which we found aged approx sixth months, abandoned and starving. We adopted Blue when he was three, who had been used purely for stud purposes and that’s all. Both Blue and Poppy have passed on. We adopted Mabel three years ago. Ours was her third home. She had spent her first twelve months in conditions similar to yours - crated and unloved. Your story struck a major chord. I’d concur with JudyN - move heaven and earth to get someone you trust to pop in to let her out. We could leave Poppy and Blue for up to four hours and they’d be quite happy. Only you can judge whether your new girl can accept this new regime immediately but it sounds a darn sight better than her previous home. We’ve been working re separation with Mabel in easy steps - up to two hours provided that George, the rescued cat, is with her. The very best of luck. I hope it works well. As and when I would (as indeed would we all) be grateful for an update on how it goes. I’m sure you’ll appreciate that I love the breed - all sighthounds for that matter. It may be worthwhile your getting in touch with a whippet rescue concern who may be able to put you in touch with a local owner who could give some helpful thought to the issue.

Addendum - apologies for duplicated photos and “….in conditions similar to yours - crated and unloved” - I meant her former home not the home you’re providing. Oh Lord, it’s late and I’m cream crackered.

Thanks for replying.
We were supposed to give the dog back today but I rang last night and said we would keep her a bit longer .Tomorrow I will be leaving them both for the first time for my working day. I will give them a good walk before I go and leave lots of chewy toys and teddy’s for her to play with.
I will consider a dog Walker but like everyone times are not the easiest and money is tight.
Hopefully things will go ok tomorrow .As I said we love her and she just craves the affection she is receiving while living with us so fingers crossed!

Fingers crossed. You can probably record audio using your computer, so you could listen back later to see if she has been entertaining the neighbours with her singing...

Best of luck - every digit crossed.

For what it’s worth, Mabel and George were left alone in the house for three hours yesterday while we went into town for my op and then again for an hour when Mrs RGC came to collect me. There was no damage nor naughty/boredom destruction upon our return only an enthusiastic whippet who was trying to throw herself on me and a cat winding himself around our legs. This was a major breakthrough. We’d let them have the run of the house. Taking into account that your new girl is beginning to bond with a calm bichon should be a major help. Let us know how it goes.

Hello all.I’m so grateful for the advice you gave given me so far .Thanks.
Suzie and Alfie have been ok whilst I’ve been out.I wondered if I would come back to trauma but all is well. Phew what a relief.
She is staying for the time being so I will keep you all updated.
