I picked up our 6 new hens this morning from hen welfare trust.
They are barn raised so have never been outside, where very bewildered at the wind and the sun.
Can't wait to see them in full feather!

Aww, lovely - you must post more pics when they're fully feathered, their combs have pinked up and their eyes have come to life!

Can't believe how skinny and bald they are. Humans can be so cruel :(

Actually feel abit traumatised with the amount, smell and state of the hens on the rescue farm, and that was just a small percentage of hens rescued from the barn.

It's horrible, isn't it? But it will be so rewarding when you see them transform.

I'd love to have some ex-batts but we hardly ever eat eggs. And there's no way I could have them with Jasper.

Ex- battery hens make good layers, they have spent their most productive life in the cages and now deserve a few more happy years in peoples gardens.
Once they have molted and have their new feathers, and also some colour in their pale combs they will look much better. They will soon adjust to their new lives. Lucky girls ;)

These hens may never get "fat", they are bred to be laying machines, it's a bit like a dairy cow, some are just skin and bones. They are all well fed, they have to be, to produce the huge amounts of eggs that the commercial producers require, they have water and controlled living conditions. Unfortunately the poor old hens never see day light and their cages are quiet restricted. It is very sad:oops:

If everyone bought Organic free range eggs these poor hens wouldn't have to live in appalling conditions still ...people don't realise barn kept hens never see the light of day :eek::oops::oops::mad::(

We bought some ex-commercial hens for our local community type farm (they were previously free range but we were just saving them from slaughter, not choosing specifically). It was so good to see them free and we got some eggs too. The lovely charity that saves them is called Wing and a Prayer.

Lovely to see them outside.
I would keep an eye out for foxes. We have urban foxes and they can rip through chicken wire. :(
