Nerve Damage?

Audrey if it is a "trapped" nerve of something similar, time and rest could be the answer for recovery.

Many years ago we had a dog that got a back injury when stopping for the lure and he was unable to stand on his back legs, he just dragged them around. With a long rest and plenty of t.l.c. he eventaully did make a recovery and was back on all 4 again, but unfortunately never to race again but at least he led a long and active life thereafter. So if Rocky moved awkwardly and has "pinched" the spinal cord in his neck or back (as ours did) time and rest he should make a full recovery. Hope this makes you feel more positive and fingers crossed he makes a full recovery.

paul maclachlan is very good at this sort of thing,folks around southport use him a lot. home no01772 458852, mob broken at the moment.worth a call if not to far he would travel.

Thanks David but vet says no chiropractioner at moment, might later on. However I live right on the south coast so a long way from Stockport

Good news or rather better news is Rocky is sitting up instead of just laying on his side. Vet thinks he would be better in his own home in a cage so he is COMING HOME TOMORROW. Right legs still not working but hope time will tell. At least I shall be able to give him a kiss and a cuddle

Well that's nice to hear that he is showing some positive signs. I am sure as soon as he is back with his mum he will feel a lot better. :thumbsup: :luck:

Well Rocky is home. Very Alert and watches everything and wants anything to eat. Vet said I must move him every few hours but he cries when I try to move him or turn him and he will not attempt to go to the toilet when I lift him outside. In fact all his legs turn to jelly when I lift him out. He doesnt like to lay on his good side but just now I persisted and in his attempt to turn on his own he stood up putting weight on ALL his legs. He then half turnd and is now lying on his front just like a normal whippet pose. First time I think from what the vet said as they said he just laid on his side. They did have a muzzle on him when I collected him which I couldn't understand as he is such a passive dog. Apparently the neck does hurt and like me when lifting him it hurt him and he must have tried or they were frightened he would snap at them. Don't know how the night will go as he is used to having a morphine injection every night now he is only on strong painkillers but time will tell.

Have you asked about temporary steroid treatment?

& referral to an appropriate specialist?

I hope Rocky makes a reasonable recovery. He is young enough yet that I would want to give him time and explore treatment options (with luch time and rest and short-term medication may be all he needs).
 
Hello Audrey, sounds like Rocky has started to make a small improvement which you should see now daily. If he has trapped a nerve in his neck/back when you try to lift him it will make him cry with the pain, but in time that should improve also. Have you got a Magneto box you could put him in a couple of times a day that should help a lot. Saxon Tiger has a back injury when she was 2 yrs old, but not as severe as Rocky's, and when we tried picking her up she always cried. We put her in the box twice daily and gave her half a 75 mg Asprin twice daily and that helped her, Although we layed her off racing for 6 mnths to give her time to recover which she did. So time does heal, albeit slowly, but he should make a recovery if the injury is similar to what we have experienced in the past, but it does take time. All the best for his recovery. :thumbsup:

Natural instinct for him to lie on the damaged side so it's not vulnerable but keep persevering Audrey :thumbsup: Really important that he alternates from lying on both sides and you keep him moving about.

I wouldn't bat an eyelid about the muzzling, just a precaution because even the most gentile of dogs can lash out if in pain.

Promising that he's improving 3 days in, I know you must be heartbroke to see him this way but keep remembering those little improvements. :thumbsup:
