Its sad... Its wet , its windy, its muddy and so for many dogs this means no adventures , no long walks , no trips to the country, just quick walks on concrete pavements and a sniff at a local park if they are lucky. Murphy is out and about rain or shine. While I realise not all dogs can enjoy this kind of weather its sad that so many get confined to those short walks just because the humans dont want to get dirty or wet. I want to tell them all to buy a raincoat and pull on their welly boots its still wonderful outside!

I can’t understand people who do this personally. Grab some waterproofs and then enjoy a nice cup of tea when you’re back home :)
Last winter I was dog walking one day and I remember just being soaked through for 6 hours and cleaning up after lots of dogs wondering why I had chosen todo this. Then I got home, had a shower and a cup of tea and it was all worth it

Some days I'd quite like to skip a walk (and I did when it was really hot), but given the choice of getting soaked and listening to Jasper whinge for the next few hours, I know what I'd prefer:D

My mum once said to me as I was heading out the door, 'But what if it rains?' If it rains, I'll get wet. That's OK, I get wet in the shower too, it's not as if I'll shrink or anything!

lol love this ^ in NL they say...Its not like Im made of sugar ..meaning I wont melt if I get wet.
I just think its part of life with dog, rain, mud, frozen fingers, it goes with the territory.. My new wellies arrive tomorrow..Im so excited!

I find it quite empowering - no more 'Oh no, I wanted to do X today but it's raining so I can't,' but 'It's raining - so?' :)

And yes, after those walks where you threw caution to the wind and didn't take a coat and once home had to change into dry everything, underwear included, there's nothing better than snuggling down in clean dry clothes with a mug of hot coffee.

Today is exactly two years since Murphy came home... We took him on a special walk to Lauwersoog a Unesco world heritage site where he played a ran about like a mad thing and I put together a slide show of his first two years..

Just caught up on Murphys thread. you have a wonderful dog.

Dittoing memory care and pets. i work at a nursing home where most of my residents have some form of dementia or other. They don't know what day of the week it is but you BET they ask every time if "that little dog is in". watching people just light up when they come into the gym and see Bax brightens my day to!

Also ditto the weather. I wont go out if its TO hot (partially cause i hate the heat and partially cause bax doesnt have boots for the hot concrete) but i will 100% head out in the rain. I dont mind getting wet and i actually enjoy a nice walk in a drizzle. if its TO wet though Bax will mutiny and do an about face back inside.

Oh Lord good ideas that come to haunt you.. About a month ago I enquired about training classes...Well the email has arrived to say that classes start next week.
Ive answered it because I think it will be good for Murphy to meet new people and other surroundings to be honest I think weve let him be too much of a dog (if that makes any sense) on the other hand it means going out meeting new people and new surroundings having the obligation to turn up etc..
Not looking forward to it ... But in the meantime we are having brilliant walks just the three of us (and nature) at sunrise..

Just caught up on Murphy's story and have enjoyed it thoroughly!
He's a beautiful boy!
It's so nice how much he has benefited you partner too :)
Where do you live? It's beautiful! I wish we had the luxury of such stunning walks!

I love walking in the rain! Roxy doesn't mind at all! I might have tried to avoid it if she hated getting wet but I've always taken her out in the sun, rain and snow! She just loves walkies and can always be rinsed off when we get home so why not!?

I agree there's nothing better than coming home, putting on my comfy around-the-house clothes (inc. fluffy socks) with a nice cup of hot chocolate! Heaven! :)

Good luck @Mad Murphy - I’m sure it will be a great journey for you both

@Jack-Russell-Lover thankyou, we are in Friesland NL Friesland travel - Lonely Planet

We know its lovely, in 1990 we decided to change our pace of life leave London and head north for this lovely area of The Netherlands where our children could have the luxury of growing up among nature and fresh air instead of traffic and pollution.

Oh wow, how lovely, yes, such a big difference from the busy, noisy and polluted London!

This morning we decided Murphy might like some sea air so we packed our breakfast and headed off to Zurich.
We arrived at 7.40 so before the sun was even up but the reward for that was that Murphy had the beach all to himself ....if you ignore the geese!

While out and about Murphy gets asked a lot of questions... This morning
dad said 'can you see what I see'? Murphy thought if I knew what you were looking at I might have a chance...Mum help!
DSCN3316.JPG

A deer asked , 'do you think my bum looks big from this angle'?

DSCN3309.JPG

Hmm he couldnt be sure....
DSCN3326.JPG

then one of the highland cows asked 'What are you looking at laddie'?

At which point Murphy decided that discretion is the better part of valour and beat a hasty retreat!

At this time of year we often find we are the only people out and about early in the morning and yet it can be so lovely. The early morning sun is so pretty and Murphy looks so good when the sun hits him.
Ive just heard there is another challenge coming up. My sister in law has booked a ticket to come and see us and will be staying two weeks ! after she sent the message to say she had booked everything she added 'hope thats ok with you'?
Hopefully Murphy will be ok with her shes small and these days (early dementia) very hesitant and not positive in her movements which might upset him.. But we still have two training lessons before she arrives and lots of nice mornings to enjoy in peace. So we will worry about her once she gets here.

They say pride comes before a fall and oh how we did fall this morning.

Murphy has been doing so well at training so we have been letting him have off lead time on an enclosed field each morning to play ball and it has all been going so well. But this morning a pair of swans flew low along the hedge line and he was off chasing them. His prey drive is high we knew that but chasing flying birds? Thats new,, OH chased after him yelling and I was reminded of the FENTON !!!! film on youtube. I blew my whistle and sure enough Murphy gave up the chase and trotted back our way but OH was very shaken he was convinced Murphy was going to vanish over the horizon .. So hes in the dog house today ..
Oh the joy of having a high prey drive dog
