I took my puppy Jambo to the vets the other day to get his second injection and asked the vet whether I could have him microchipped to save me going back again. She said that was OK but I might want to go out to the waiting room and she would get a nurse to hold him as he would scream as it hurts them that much!

Needless to say I told her I would bring him back another time but am now not sure that I will.

Does microchipping really hurt them that much?

Of course it doesn't - no more than the injections as the needle, although large is very sharp and none of mine have ever screamed out

It is a very sharp needle(needs to be) and mine did squeal, it hurts for about 2 seconds thats all, but don't be put off they forget about it very quickly especially if you give them a treat, believe me they won't mind the two seconds of pain if they get reunited with you should the worst happen

I stayed with mine for the cuddle after :huggles:

I think it does hurt them more than some other injections as the needle is broader to accomodate the chip. However think the vet overreacted a bit, if what they said was enough to put you off getting it done. I wouldnt dream of taking a dog out without it being microchipped. Ok so it may well squeal a bit, but mine squeals when she has her toe nails clipped & that doesnt hurt her at all.

Frankie didn't make a peep when he had his done, neither did Chloe. Holly squeaked for a second as it went in, only the same as if you trod on her toe. Nothing to worry about, get it done!

mine didnt bat a eye lid, think they was more interested in what the nurse had,a lovely treat

I wouldn't worry- none of mine have flinched like with Trish and Graham's they were too interested in the treat that was about to come.

One thing I would say, though, is that I has my Tess's done at the same age as yours and the chip moved alot into her neck where it is now clearly visible, and easy enough for a thief to cut out if they wanted. I have discussed this with a few people and they thought that it was because I had it too young so I left it a bit with Esme, and I hope this one will stay put. :luck:

Alfie was far too interested in the treat i had in my hand to notice, he flinched a tiny bit but did not squeal.

I have all my puppies microchipped at 7 weeks and most of them don't say a peep. The first one is always too curious about its new surroundings to notice any needlepricks in the neck and the siblings who follow have seen the one before them getting yummy threats from my vets husband...

Dolly didn't notice at all. she was too interested in trying to find out what treats were in the vets pocket!!

Both mine were done by the same vet, Evie squealed for a few seconds and then enjoyed her treat, Gracie didn't bat an eyelid and was more interested in the treat in my hand, its worth having it done, just don't forget to take some yummy treats with you

Mine gave a little whimper. I think it stings more than hurts.

I wouldnt worry, Pimms had hers done at her second jab :)) . My vet was the same and warned me that she would squeal loads. . So I held her really tight.....and then she didnt make a peep :huggles: !

I think its def worth getting them done, after all, could you bear to loose you snippet?

:huggles:

My sister is an autherised microchipper :huggles: and came to my house to do mine , not one has ever made a noise, She does all home visits , much better and cheaper no doubt than the vet

I remember when I took Sparky to have his done the vet put her pen down on the table turned her back to pick up the chip thingy, he was so smug he had pinched her pen he didn't notice when she chipped him.

Jenny

it took 3 attempts to chip Dij

Attempt 1 -needle approaches, Dij squeals like a girl!

Attempt 2 - (with extra nurse to help hold him) needle approaches, more girlie squeeling

Attempt 3 - needle actually deployed - NOT A BLUMMIN MURMUR!

definately worth doing - is a very small price to pay

That is sooo funny Jenny :D

Jambo is my first whippet so I am just getting introduced his 'little ways' and the thieving is simply outrageous. I now know if I hear the heavy thumping of paws it means that he has secured his latest trophy which is held high in the air and swiftly taken to the garden! No swag seems to be out of the question for his haul.

Thanks everyone for your comments it has put my mind at ease, I will get him chipped - I'll send my partner with him to get it done :- "

Careful! I think your partner may object more than the dog at being chipped!!!!!! :- "

I chipped 32 dogs at our show on Sunday, apart from the usual - Westies and Borders terriers (they are al wimps!!) not one dog knew they had been chipped!! that includes a very small and very obnoxious Chihuahua - it was so intent on taking our heads off that it didn't realise that we has actually done the deed!!!

I agree - Zephyr had his done with his injections and didn't feel a thing!!
