Metacam $$$$$$$$$$

Tesa said:
Even though Max has had test several times giving him the all clear, we can see something is just not quite right with either his kidney's or liver.  Have renamed him Piddling Pete  .  Am now concerned the Metacam will do more halm than good
Please bear in mind that dogs can drink lots/pee frequently/dribble wee for zillions of reasons, from liver/kidney problems to Cushing's disease, diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, urinary calculi to prostate problems, various other nasties and even simple behavioural issues. I have cases where I have never found an underlying problem. Although obviously all any test can do is show how an organ is functioning there and then, I would be inclined to trust the results. Obviously things can change and any older dog needs to be monitored closely on medication, but he has to be comfortable too. This isn't a personal comment at all Karen, but sometimes owners become so concerned about possible (and pretty unlikely) side effects that they lose sight of the simple fact that their dog is sore. Keep in close touch with the vet, and keep them informed of any other remedies you have tried that have been helpful. :huggles:

Max is probably piddling becuase of his age, sadly he is becoming incontinent. I am not sure if there is anything that can be done for male dog of his age to regain a bladder control? :(

Hi Karen, is it worth taking him to see George Schofield?

I am also wondering about trying to find a more natural treatment. Have a look at Tracy Browns site, she makes all sorts of herbal concoctions for dogs & horses.

www.brownsanimalherbals.com

I use Phuds made by her as a feed supplement. I know some people have used her skind detox for dogs with great success. She makes joint food & stuff for arthritic dogs too. Worth a look, good luck

Who's George Linda, and where is he?

Sorry Karen, George is a 'muscle man'. He started out treating greyhounds but now treats any breed. He manipulates them. Dont know if he can help your boy but he has magic hands & has often helped dogs that vets cant. He doesn't charge much either, only about $10. 1530 Mickelham Rd Craigeburn 9333 1602 open every day except Tuesday but you should ring first just in case he's on hols.

When you arrive just go into the shed & write your name on the blackboard so you'll be seen in turn.

I take mine there several times a year just to keep them tuned up. Usually he finds something 'out' but once when he checked Kibah over I asked was anything out of place, he said "nope, not even a hair"

George sounds brilliant but a tad far for me to go on a regular basis!!! I would certainly give him a go though Karen!

For me it's about 170ks round trip but I still go at least 3 times a year & I think it's very worthwhile. When Kibah was young she used to trot sideways, you know some dogs when you watch them from behind they trot crooked? I just assumed it was the way she was made until I heard about George. I thought I may as well see if it was something he could fix. He sure did! I reckon if I'd gone to a vet they'd probably want to x-ray & put her on anti-inflams & goodness knows what. It would've cost a fortune & quite likely they wouldn't know how to fix it. George chardged me $8 to fix it. His price has gone up since then, it's $10 now.

Vale Max

Not a happy ending. There has been another thread posted on Max, but as he was such a lovely old boy I have left it as a tribute to him, and not posted any details of tonight.

It's been a crappy week, but we did go ahead with the Metacam and had appointments booked for next weeks pyhsio & acupunture. Up until this week we had thought we were dealing with some sort of injury to the foot, so on the vets advice we have been resting him. I decided last night that as it was now confirmed as arthritis, it would be better in the long run if I started walking him again. We had the nicest little strole down to the corner and back. For a dog with a sore paw he was getting along at a cracking pace. He was fine this morning when I left for work.

Came home tonight to find him curled up on the ground on the far side of the deck. He was an absolute mess. His rear end had just about completely colasped under him. He looked like he had been hit by a car (not possible). As it was about 5.45pm on a Friday night and we live 30 minutes out of town, I spoke to the vets on the phone. On their advice we gave him a dose of the Metacam and waited to see if he could be made more comfortable. He ate some tea and looked quite happy and relaxed for a while. About 9.30ish he looked like he wanted to go out to the toliet. He was in an even bigger mess, so into town. Knew the answer before we got there. We suspect that he may have either slipped or fallen from the deck and damaged vertabra (possibly even spinal damage). The vet suspected he has been such a stoic dog that he has been masking his pain quite well. Even tonight in the surgery all his legs had given out on him and he was still trying to crawl to Brian.

R.I.P my Max'ie Boy o:)
