Hi, I have a 6 year old Irish setter that has had multiple operations due to his habit of stealing and eating clothing and TV controllers when he was younger. Now he suffers from gastric problems that result in extreme flatulence and bad breath. Our vet has prescribed Science diet ID , which the dog is not partial to, and still gives him a lot of flatulence and belching. This results in having to wind him to relieve the pain he feels.

Has anyone else faced this problem with their dogs, and are there any other types of food that may prove suitable to alleviate the problem for our dog.

Hello. You could try royal canin gastrointestinal instead of the hills, it seems to be more palatable. I feed the low fat version but they have a regular one too. I get mine from pet planet which is much cheaper than getting it from your vet.

I believe that you can get charcoal biscuits and also granulated charcoal which you add to food - I've never used it myself though, you might need to ask your vet about it before using.

I would recommend having a look at Dorwests digestive tablets. I have used them with success on various digestive upsets, but not particularly for wind - thank goodness :)

I am a big fan of Natural Yoghurt. I give my dog a dessertspoonful every morning. If something stronger is required to start with then Fortiflora is good.

Have you tried feeding a raw diets? Particularly raw tripe. It's very good for sorting out stomach problems

I give mine lots of bones to chew on but I wouldn't risk it with a dog who had had an operation because of obstruction you can get prepared raw food with crushed bone content that wouldn't cause any problems with obstuction

Raw green tripe is especially good for unsettled stomachs, full of natural and good enzymes.

Raw Green Tripe offers beneficial bacteria and enzymes. It has a desirable Calcium; phosphorus of 1.1. Green tripe's pH is acidic, the protein is 15.1% and fat is 11.7%

It also has correct proportions of Omega- 3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.

One of the best constituents of raw green tripe is Lactobacillus Acidophilus this is one of the intestinal bacteria that keep unwanted bacteria such as e-coli, salmonella and listeria from over populating and causing health problems.

A balance of micro flora in the gut is extremely important to maintaining good health. These probiotics help keep the animals immune system in top shape.

Digestive enzymes:

The enzymes that help the ruminant digest its meal will give the pet the same benefit, Dogs and cats do not naturally produce amylase, so the nutrients present in vegetative matter are not readily available to them. Raw green tripe contains these digestive enzymes.
