Hi Jan, Libby should have been coming out at Blackpool and is looking lovely-We were so excited getting ready for it but sadly she broke her leg on Friday so at present we are just pleased she has come through her operation and her leg has been saved- We had been warned they may not have been able to. She will now be recovering and I'm afraid showing will have to take a back seat for now- I would love to think she will recover fully and may still get into the ring at some stage in future but that is very much secondary to her recovering and having a nice life- either way she will no doubt be around as she can always come NFC as my Papillon girls will be at shows and seems a shame to leave her at home so she will always be available for kisses and cuddles at the ringside.

My advice to anyone coming across this thread thinking of getting an Italian Greyhound is to insure to the maximum you can afford- we have racked up almost £4000 of vet and specialist bills over a weekend and our insurance will cover only half.

That is just heart breaking, I insure for up to £7,500. I am really sorry to hear about this but unfortunately leg breaks are on the increase again. Hugs to Libby, she is so lucky to have you as her owner. If you need any help or advice please gte in touch

Thank you Jan - I had completely underestimated the potential costs and thought I had taken enough cover- I have now taken a different policy with up t0 £12000 cover which will cover everything except the right leg break or arthritis as a result of this- One lesson learned the hard way but upwards and onwards...

She is being so good as she is on enforced crate rest for weeks now and then we will build up slowly again. She is the most beautiful, loving little girl- we are lucky to have her in the family.

So sorry to hear this. It doesn't take much for vet's bills to spiral. Hope Libby is feeling better soon. Hugs

Thank you - she is being very good so far- fingers crossed for a full recovery. The main thing is she is ok- I would have paid anything!

best of luck for a total recovery
Thank you- It will take a while as lots of crate rest will mean lots of muscle loss and so the vicious circle and fear of more breaks continue.

I will take it very slowly and I'm afraid it will be a while before she is running in the fields again but she will get there.

A baptism of fire in the breed really but if we get through this - which we will- then we will get through anything.

What a wonderful, gentle breed they are...

Oh dear - I hope she mends ok. :luck: Is this something genetic the breed is prone to or did she have an accident?

I THINK IT WAS A COMBINATION OF LONG SPINDLY PUPPY LEGS THAT HAVENT MUSCLED UP YET FOR EXTRA STRENGTH AND AN UNFORTUATE TWIST.

Others with more experience of the breed would be able to add more re prevelance but I do believe it is quite high. Hopefully when she gets back to exercise muscle build up around the bone will add extra shock absorbtion and as she develops more her bones will strengthen. Just one of those things- nothing could have been done differently so just need to get her recovered now.

Any dog with long bone can break a leg given the wrong circumstances but it is particually prelevant in some lines of Iggies and has been for many years. This is due soley to bone density and it doesnt help if you continually breed parents with leg breaks to others with leg breaks themselves or in their lines.

I was told recently of a little bitch who broke one leg and then broke the other and was put down as the vet said that the legs would continue breaking as the bone was so bad and that is really so sad as she really was the most sweetest little bitch and the owners did everything they could for her.

Puppies from 8 months to 18 months are the most at risk of a break and it is known as the greenstick stage.

I have to say the instance of leg breaks in iggies is on the increase again which is not good for the breed.

I have everything crossed here that we get no more breaks and am following vet's advice to the letter and some good tips given by IG people. My biggest fear is another break and this is on my mind constantly. Libby will not be bred from.

I'm much more a of a lurker than a poster, but i wanted to offer you a happy outcome story. My second iggy, Nico, broke his leg at 12 1/2 weeks, the day after he came home to us. He had been on an off the low sofa lots of times, we were happy that he was safe. I was in the kitchen, with a friend supervising him. Something caught his eye on the floor, he flew off and landed funny. Snap! But he'll be a year old next month and all is behind us. The break healed perfectly, but there were other issues, but I try not to think about that! It was a hard stage and I think he's suffered from having such a horrid start in life but he's overcome many of his foibles and is a wonderful dog.

Jan Doherty - i wonder if we know of the same dog. I heard that my Belle's litter sister (who was/would have been a year old in March) suffered this sad sad fate. needless to say its now one of my biggest fears that we'll have breaks with Belle. I hope the dog you knew is the same one I'm thinking of - I'd hate to think of their being more than one girl suffering the same

Annemarie - i too had a baptism of fire. Our two are 6 months apart and 5 days after Nico broke Belle was unexpectedly diagnosed with meningitis. Blooming nightmare! But i can honestly say i don't think anything with dogs will ever phase me in quite the same way again. We are now insured upto £12k a year! Unfortunatly Nico broke on an expensive policy and has a bent leg now due to growth plate damage as he was so young, so we're stuck with the pricy insurer given that we are assuming that he will get arthritis.

Hi Jez , welcome to the forum. I am really glad that people are coming forward with their stories about leg breaks as this is the single most expensive injury that can happen to an Iggie and people need to know that it is a possibility when they are buying this breed of dog. I have heard of several dogs over the years breaking both front legs. Several who break the same leg again. I understand the breeder of the bitch who was put down has said she will not breed again from that line so is acting responsibly which is all that can be asked.

Most breaks seem to occur when the dog does something peculier like landing funny or jumping from height. Twisiting will also cause a break.

The real heartbreak is that these are such special little dogs regardless of who breed them and from day one they get under your skin. They endure so much when they break a leg and an Iggie screaming after a leg break can apparently freeze the heart.

Meningitis is really common in Iggies. I have had two with it. Luckily it is treatable if the vet picks it up quick enough.

Thanks again for sharing

Thanks for the welcome

Really you've had 2 with it Jan...urgh! I knew it was on the up but I don't know of many people with first hand experience. Belle is off the steroids (which were just awful for her, she had every side effect going) but still having monthly chemo, which is the new thing for meningitis. I'll just be glad when its over. They do the iggy death scream when they break their legs, and also when having a meningitis relapse i found. I heard far too much of it last november. Still, i wouldn't change my two for the world.

The breeder of the broken legged girl I know, and Belle is still making noises about breeding the mum again. It makes me so so cross. And upset to think of another family having sick pets and maybe not having the insurance cover. Grrrr

Now, I'm getting worried listening to leg break horror stories. My new pup is coming home later in the week.

Jan: How do you tell if the dog has meningitis?
