Lack of appetite after upset tummy

hi, our 5 month old mini labradoodle had an upset tummy this week; loose stools (Thursday), then vomited the day after (Friday), seemed hungry but not interested in food once it was out in front of him. He went to the vets that day and was given anti nausea injection, rehydration powder and some veterinary food for the next couple of days. I suspect it was as a result of too many treats from puppy training as he normally gets 1/2 teeny tiny ones a day at most.

He’s definitely more spritely again and running around the garden etc, and the poops seem to firm/firmer again and there’s been no vomiting since that one day. But he’s not that interested in eating when food is put in front of him. He’s normally raw fed so wasn’t terribly enamoured with the vet food, but has been eating it (with some encouragement) and it’s obviously doing it’s job.

How can we encourage his appetite back or is it common that it’ll take a few days to come back as he gets more active again etc? Any tips?

Is he back on the raw food now and is it that that he's turning his nose up at? When my dog was getting over a sedative last week he wouldn't eat his raw food, or raw chicken fillets, but he would eat the chicken fillets once I'd cooked them (plus some boiled rice). Cooked meat may be easier on his digestion, or the smell may just be more enticing. I've also found in the past that chicken broth (boil up a chicken carcasse in water for 40 mins or more, give him the liquid, save the meat for when he feels up to it, throw away the bones) goes down very well, which can prevent dehydration if he's not drinking much.

It is very soon since your dog was poorly, though, so he may well just need more time.

It’s the raw that he’s turning his nose up at. I tried a turkey and fish one that he normally loves, but did wonder if it was a bit strong/smelly for him after a bad tummy. Luckily he’s drinking well, will even drink water with the rehydration stuff in it!

Will try him with some cooked chicken. He’s interested in food and he’s nosing around when I’m cooking.

So, I just cooked up a small chicken breast and he gobbled it up. To the point he starting pushing his bowl against my foot and is now stalking me around the chicken excitedly!

When I start to try to get him back into raw assume I need to do slowly? Or should he be ok as it’s been all he’s eaten until 3 days ago. Apologies, first time raw feeder!

No need to apologise - I'm not sure to be honest! It would make sense to go slowly though, because there'll be less waste if he still doesn't fancy it, and because you really don't want it to reappear I gave Jasper a couple of dollops later in the week and he was fine with them, so I went back to his normal amounts, but of course he wasn't ill, he just needed the drugs to clear his system.
