Hi All!

Later this year I'm going to have to put my little boy Mouse in kennels (not happy about it but I can't persuade my family to have him for more than a couple of days) :(

I'm trying to find a good kennel for him to go to and would obviously prefer him to go somewhere thats recommended, particularly recommended by Whippet owners

If anyone knows of any very good kennels in or around the Peterborough area please let me know so that I can go and have a look round them in preperation (equally if anyone knows any to avoid please let me know too!)

I don't know any kennels (as I'm not from that area) But I was wondering if there was a "Barking Mad" in that area? I used them once and they were incredibly good. They come to your home and interview you to find out your dogs routine then they come back and take your dog away to a dog or dog free household who will look after him while you're away, they then bring him back on your return. They even get a little tag put on their collar saying "I'm on holiday if found please ring...."

I have a great kennel I can highly recommend down here in Dorset, but that's probably way too far for you

Hello Jingles,

I've just got a job working for a kennels in the countryside near Paultons Park (Totton area) called Copied Hall Kennels. It's really good there as the staff are very kind and excellent dog handlers, and the dogs go 'free-range' and are allowed to run around in open pens together where they can play and socialise. They get two walks daily in an enclosed field and two meals daily too. If you don't want your dog in with others, you can ask for a separate pen at no extra cost (but your dog might get lonely). They also get their enclosures cleaned with discinfectant daily and all messes are picked up as soon as they are spotted. So all in all, it's a very good kennels, and as far as I know, it's been recommended by vets to dog owners in the area.

I always use Whitelodge Kennels, they are really good and have an enclosed paddock for exercise. They are greyhound / lurcher etc specialists as they are also a rescue centre. :)

i dont think there are any good kennels in the UK are there?

We put ours in kennels in Devon and i went to get him a week early because i missed him and ive never seen anything like it, he was in a pitch black kennel cold and damp.. not where i left him.... clearly they move them once you have left were very reluctant to let me in!!!!!

fantastic looking kennels, lovely when you go and view them but 'behind the scenes' !!!!! i dont trust any of them, if i needed to put my boy in a kennel.....i just would go without !!!

That's awful! :( I put my boys in a different kennel between Christmas and New Year because my usual kennel was closed. First off the kennel owner said he would have them in an outdoor kennel during the day (unheated) and an indoor one at night - bearing in mind my boys are greyhounds and hate the cold, and it was freezing at Christmas! I told him that wasn't good enough and they were to have an indoor kennel at all times, which they did.

Then when I got back and picked them up - Tiny had an untreated bite wound on the head and they both stank and felt dirty and were really thin (they are just back to their normal weight now!) Max hates being dirty and was so embarassed in the car, he kept crying and trying to clean himself. I felt awful, and they won't be going back there again.

Having said that I used that kennel all the time with my old GSD and never had any problems, I think he likes certain dogs better than others.

BUT Whitelodge, who I normally use are fantastic, they are kept clean and warm in indoor kennels, have lots yummy treats and lots of exercise. :)

That's a pretty sweeping statement!!

That's a shame what you've experienced, but just like you can't judge all dog owners by one bad owner you can't judge all kennels by one bad experience. I DO agree that the bad ones outnumber the good ones, but that doesn't mean there aren't ANY.

See my post above regarding a great kennel in Dorset. Trust me, if my girls weren't happy they wouldn't be eating, and certainly wouldn't be coming out the same weight as going in (which is rare at ANY kennel, good or bad), nor would they DRAG me back in when we go back the next time.

It is a sweeping statement but its how i feel im afraid. I have friends who have experienced problems and not just minor ones, in various Kennels all over!.

If anyone hurts my dog we all feel it.!!

You must admit, there is no need to treat them like that. When i was shown round the kennels it was all the nice bits, kennels with runs, heated and nice bedding. They were obviuosly caught unawares at my last minute arrival!.

they wer very cagey about where he was and didnt want me to see it either.!!

These kennels were at the back of their own garden away from the log cabin type that i saw when i viewed! and the pretty log cabins were nearly empty!!

out of order im afraid. :rant:
 
I used to work in kennels, and i would never consider leaving my dogs in one due to the fact that my dogs love being with people and going for long walks and comfort. It is nigh on impossbile for kennel staff to spend any amount of time with their charges, it broke my heart watching these dogs get evermore stressfull. They are only walked twice a day to clean the kennel, which barely takes 4minutes, the only other time you see them is when you feed them or on passing when doing chores.

There were times when you "allowed" to spend quality time with the more stressed out ones. I remember Stoily who wouldn't get off her bed, eat or walk or do her business, after a few days of attention she would only allow me to walk her and would only eat very slowly if I stayed in the kennel with her. Coco, who just wanted a cuddle. And the times things went wrong, Flo who freaked out walking between the kennels and nearly got her toe bitten off, Toby who chewed andscratched at the door until he bleed.

We used to walk the dogs on a choke chain (which I hate) because most of the dogs would try to bolt as soon as the door was opened and it meant you could just slip it over their heads, and the idiots who would put the wrong sized chains on so they couldn't get them off again, causing the dog to bite and snap.

I often wondered what these poor dogs where thinking on being left here, of course there were dogs who just didn't mind at all but the ones who where stressed out numbered these by about ten to one.

The people who returned and said "Oh, he looks like he had a thourghly nice time" if only they had video footage of how their dog been, I think they would of cried. Needless to say i did on many occasion.

There are kennels out there who are sensible enough to have under 10 kennels, and spend times with the dogs but these are few and far between.
 
The kennels I recommended to Jingles have nothing to hide. You can see all of the kennels.

The only reason mine lose a bit of weight is due to the amount of time they spend charging around the paddock!

I had to laugh after one stay, as Rosie our greyhound had persuaded the owner to feed her pilchards! Manipulative or what!

i dont think there are any good kennels in the UK are there?

We put ours in kennels in Devon and i went to get him a week early because i missed him and ive never seen anything like it, he was in a pitch black kennel cold and damp.. not where i left him.... clearly they move them once you have left were very reluctant to let me in!!!!!

I would never kennel my dog, id go without a holiday first

I have worked in two kennels, one would only feed ALL dogs a cheap complete regardless what they were fed at home, they were also only fed once a day in the evenings also regardless of when they were fed. The worst thing was (I found out later) that they used to drug (ASP?) the barkers at night as the kennels were in a normal street and they had a lot of complaints. One of the owners was a vet and she drugged a Boxer that had a serious heart complaint :rant: I think that they got reported for that. It is now under new ownership. They also only had certain number of heat lamps and not enough for every kennel.

The other I worked in used to overbook and then double up single dogs from different families in the same kennels so that they room for the extra dogs. It was sometimes 50% of the dogs that shared kennels were not from the same family. I didn't think that this was right, it was ok exercising some dogs together as they could have a play but not two strange dogs in an enclosed space. They did however feed what ever the dogs were used to and when the dogs were used to eating. Also every kennel had a heat lamp if it was needed.

I would not want to put mine in kennels at all though, I would ask my mum or a friend to have them for me if I needed to. I don't have holidays though so it is not really an issue to me.

ACP? Yuck - Tiny was given that in the transport over from Ireland - he was sick, peed and pooed himself, was totally disoriented and didn't know what was going on!

Like I said, Whitelodge is excellent, small, indoor heated kennels, proper food twice a day plus treats, give any medication you require, lots of exercise in an enclosed paddock etc.

The bad experience I had was at another kennel when Whitelodge was closed over Christmas.

Have you considered a pet sitter? I have decided my cats are too old for kennels now and they are having a qualified pet sitter coming to look after them. :)

Some dogs were drugged every night and if they were in for a few weeks then it can't have done them any good.

Pet sitter does sound like a good idea, the dogs get to stay in a place they know and would be far less stressed.
