Jumping Up

We've tried the 'turn your back on them' technique. Worked a treat with Molly and she doesn't jump up anymore, Lenny just jumps at my back instead  :wacko:

Yes Pepe does that to, if I turn around he'll jump at my back! He's just so excited :teehee:

I give a nudge to the whippet chest with my knee during the jump. Stops jumping immediately. Then I can give to them all hugs I desire :wub:

I've got this advice from setters breeder and it was the only one thing that worked, before I've tried many tactics, but unsuccessful and this jumping was driving me mad :wacko:

I seem to think it would be easy to train the dogs if i was the only one here, the kids and OH make it so much harder because they dont do the same things :angry:

If you find a way that works let me know because mine do it whatever I do (w00t) I've tried the back turning, ignoring ect ect and have just resigned myself to the fact that when I or anybody else comes in they are going to go nuts, it's a good job my friends love them or I wouldn't have any :lol: (friends that is I'd always have the whips:teehee: )

Completey agree with you on that one. My mom and gran are so annoying when they dont listen. Drives me insane.

when i train my dogs i teach "off" to get off chairs or stop jumping up....then visitors come in shouting "down"(which they know to lie down...which they wont do when they are excited anyway!)so i end up shouting at the vistors "its not down its off"for 10 mins ...asking them to turn round would cause too much confusion for non dog people!!!can you imagine...lol.... (w00t) im not surprised noone comes round anymore..lol :lol: :lol: :lol:

Standing on toes?? That's awful!

I put my arm across me as a sort of barrier and say "no, down". If they carry on I repeat the instruction but ignore the behaviour ie don't push them or anything. They get the idea but it takes time.

Also I change my clothes a lot (w00t)

My biggest problem is Tiny jumping up at people in the street to say hello! :- "

I think different dogs need different methods but it doesn't help when OH's and other people tell them different! :- " Maybe I should trade in my OH :- "

Glad to see most whippies do the same thing! Our Willow responds well to back turning and absolutely no eye contact, and then I get her to sit (sometimes with a treat), and give a quick ear tickle, then turn away before she can launch herself at my face. I do this a few times, only tickling her if she sits or if all 4 paws are on the ground. It has taken a long time, but she knows what to do to get attention now. She used to be a nightmare and even ripped a hole in my best skirt by jumping up, but with perseverence she has made such good progress and is so much better behaved for it. Good luck!

SNAP...i use off as well & like you say people shout No, get down or Sit down & I'm saying OFF,OFF. My two older dogs are not too bad really & the stepping back thing works for them but Scrumpy the pup is soooooooo excitable, she doesnt jump up, she launches herself & twists in mid air. When shes on lead its like flying a lurcher shaped kite :teehee: , its a rare thing when all 4 feet are on the ground at the same time :clown:
