The intent is probably good... but seems a bit extreme, no?

The child, or the pet?

It's not that hard to break into a car, and you wouldn't want either to be stolen. And there's the very real danger of overheating - in the UK, it's common for dogs to succumb to overheating in a car because their owners don't realise how easily a car can turn into an oven and how badly a dog copes with heat. So the general advice is not to leave dogs unattended in cars, and even if someone leaves the AC on, opens a window a crack, and there's snow on the ground someone is likely to report it...

Not extreme IMO ....children and dogs have died being left in cars ....
Heatstroke can happen alot quicker than people think ...
In chichester carparks there are signs telling people if they are found to have left dogs in cars they will have an automatic fine ....

I have called 911 when I've seen a dog left in a car on a hot day. Someone has to be their voice and their advocate. I have thankfully never encountered a child left in a car but I would not hesitate to call 911 if after assessing the situation I felt it was warranted. (I say warranted because several years ago a friend of mine was putting her cart back in the parking lot about ten feet away from her car after buckling her toddler into her car seat and locking the car. Someone came by, saw the child and immediately called 911. She didn't realize the mom was only a few feet from the car at the time.)

@Tinytom You live near Chichester. Do you ever walk the dogs up to the windmill at Halnaker?

I find it not a great place for shopping, we go to the bank once a month to pay in. Oh how I miss Guildford !

Only trouble with a sign like that is...some people will take action after reading the sign regardless of the weather conditions.

I must say that I have never noticed the notices ! But there are quiet a lot of car parks around Chichester.

Right, that’s my fear... someone spots an off leash dog in a public area - and there is storm of condemnation from everyone and his grandmother on local social media outlets towards dog walkers. Yeah, we all get it - not everyone likes dogs, some people are afraid, there are some fearful / reactive ones out there, etc.... but it seems to me that we (“the public”) tend to see things in black and white at times, rather than applying common sense based on the circumstances...

You need to balance the idiocy of the people who would leave their dog/baby in a car when there's a real danger of harm against the idiocy of the people who will report a dog shut in a car, with AC on, windows a little open, fresh water available, in February, when the owner has just popped into a shop from which the car can be seen.

If someone does call the police, at least the police can ask pertinent questions and assess the risks - there's a difference between asking people to report instances and making it an offence to leave dogs or children unattended.

I used to go on regular group walks with a lurcher charity, which would end at a pub for lunch. Not all dogs did well inside the pub (and bear in mind there could be 20 or more people, several with more than one lurcher...), so if it was too cold to sit outside, several owners would load them up in the car and leave them there. I'm sure if one lurcher owner left their dog when the others thought it inadvisable, they'd have let them know.

Then the rescue changed its policy and anyone adopting a dog had to confirm that they would never leave it unattended in a car (can't remember if this applied retrospectively to adopted dogs - they might have officially still 'belong' to the rescue). There were a lot of very unhappy people! I'm still not sure if it was the right policy or not - I can see both sides.
