Is My Whippet Pregnant

It is worrying that you may have a litter due in just a months time, which could mean 8+ pups and absolutely no homes lined up for them.

Please do not lose sight of the fact that there may be no puppies. I love my dog as a family pet. Whippets make wonderful companions regardless of whether they are being shown. I have friends who have expressed an interest. When I say I have done nothing about homes yet I mean that I have not said yes to anyone. If she is pregnant I would want to check the people and see how they react with the puppies. I would not wish to disappoint someone who had their heart set on a potential puppy by turning them down when I saw them.

Any comments I have made are with no intention of being rude or abusive to anyone, only a love of whippets and whippet welfare. This bitch should be vet checked and scanned ASAP especially if it is a first litter and the due date is unknown.
Having read your post regarding your reasons, we are all entitled to choice. I sincerely hope that you do find loving homes for all the other pups if your girl is expecting.

Many of the forum members have seen the downside of breeding for the wrong reasons and there are a lot of whippet puppies on the market at present. As an adoption facility for unwanted whippets, this always worries me.

As you are clearly responsible and love your little girl, I would strongly advise you to have her vet checked and scanned. Hopefully, that way, you will be prepared and the pregnancy can be confirmed. She will a require specialised diet in the next few weeks and you need to know in advance if there are likely to be any problems.

Good luck :luck:

My bitches have whelped anything from 57th - 66th day from the first mating, so knowing the "exact" due date is not always much help. The sign that she will whelp soon is that her abdomen drops and her spine becomes prominent. From then on I never leave my girls alone for more than about half an hour (quick run to the shop). The important thing is to know when the labour starts. Unless you know that, it is difficult to judge if she is having problems. Anyway, you should plan to take at least 2 weeks of your annual leave at the time your bitch is due, unless you have somebody else to be with her.
