Is Missy My Whippet On The Chubby Side

Hi everyone I've been told Missy my 13 week old will be 14 weeks tommorrow is on the chubby side. I weighed her on our bathroom scales and it says she is 5.1kgs. Here are some pictures of Missy.

I think shes fine, puppies should be on the chubby side. :thumbsup:

I prefer them to be that way while their young and she will slim down as she grows.

I believe you cant put too much in a puppy and Id rather see puppies well covered at her age. :thumbsup:

Totally agree with the other posters, don't worry about her having a slim whippet shape at that age. She looks just nicely covered to me for her age

Beware of the 'experts' you meet when out and about who have an opinion on everything. One bloke I met a couple of years ago was adamant that I had been duped into buying what he called ''saluki crosses'' when I was out walking with my two pedigree whippets. Even when I told him I had seen them with their Mum from aged 5 weeks onwards and had their full pedigree papers he was adamant they were saluki crosses. His 'proof' was 'a knobbly bit on the back of their heads..' Ahhh, that would be the normal sighthound skull shape, then.... :lol:

I've since adopted a saluki x whippet and there's nowt wrong with her head either!

Missy is perfect for her age, gorgeous. People do say funny things about whippets, when I have been out with mine some people say they are small for whippets ( they are at the upper end of the standard height) or they are bigger than they thought whippets were!!! They all seems to like them when they get a nice welcome from them though!

she looks spot on to me > Ive just weighed baby Alice who at 19 weeks weighs 8.5 kgs .TBH id like a little more on Alice , but she gets as much as she wants . just a bit picky at times

I like to keep pups well covered , just in case they have an `off day ` then they lose wight so quickly

Thanks everyone I thought she was fine in weight. People have been saying that I should be able to see the 3 last ribs on her. Don't worry I have had a person say is Missy a tenterfield terrier lol. I do have another question when will MIssy hold her ears in the correct position? right now she is always holding them up straight.

Some whippets ears always “fly” or stick up, while there young they can be all over the place especially while their teething. You just have to wait and hope that when they mature and have their adult teeth their ears settle in the correct position.

I have been told that my dogs are too small, too big, too fat or I am obviously starving them. I have been told I need to pull my Whippets tail up so they would carry it high as that is the only way they will win at show. And one person had the need to run across the road to tell me that my gorgeous Borzoi (grown up one) is one of those "Shitz Sues" (she pronounced the first part without the Z) LOL

Those who have offered advice to the OP have been involved with owning, breeding and exhibiting pedigree whippets for decades.

The OP has a history of feeding her dogs to the point of obesity. No-one wants to see this whippet end up the same way.

I think Seraphina is referring to those who stop you/comment whilst out & about where you live, not those on here. The folk on here are experience(to varying levels/time) including Seraphina, that's why the question has been posed (I assume).

Any whippet puppy can be allowed to be on the chubby side up until the age of about 8/9 months...they then start to loose their puppy fat as they grow.

Sir Wj if I cut back Shelley and Rascals food even more I mos well not feed them. As it is there going around the yard eatting everything in sight, Be it dog poo,leaves,dirt,grass,fruit that has fallen off the fruit treesAS it is shelley is only getting 1 cup of biscuits and 2 tablespoon of raw meat.

I most certainly am not talkin about people who commented on this topic, as I said, I totally agree with everybody. I am talking about those people who meet you on the street and feel they have to comment on your dogs' condition.

I was talking about another forum that the OP posted on, which also has many very experienced whippet owners. When she didn't hear what she wanted to hear, she then decided to ask here.

I agree though, most non-whippet people on the street have no idea what the correct weight is for a whippet.

I know you're on the way to getting their weight under control, but please remember it's easier to control weight from an early age, rather than struggling to get it off in a few years time.
