Iida the terrier's maternity diary

When I met Mr. Hemlock, he had terriers and I had lurchers. It was a baptism of fire for both of us.

LOL..so how did it all end up with...bit of both types of dogs?
The owner of Iida's boyfriend is a terrier man and his OH is into retrievers and as we went there, he was in work so the woman came out work the stud. I could see that dog wasn't handling same way with her at all, yet it responded with us as before. And I think that might been the issue for being reluctant to do its 'job' yesterday....his 'dad' wasn't there.
But we just about to go again so fingers crossed it goes well today...

I've always had terriers and lurchers ;)

Do you find you treat them differently according to their type, @Tinytom? I have a lurcher crossed with terrier, so the best of both... depending on your definition of 'best'

Yes indeed. Lots of fun and many heartstopping moments. (sorry can't find out how to quote).

They compliment each other ...my bull lurcher is so laid back and spends alot of time with the terriers ..my other 2 lurchers are deerhound saluki crosses with other bits in and they are very similar both stubborn...mine all get 6 miles walking every day whatever the weather...

That said, I seem to have met a few recently that are a lot more mellow and chilled. Has anybody else experienced that?

Only one, but he was 17 years old;)
I was brought up with / have own terriers, so getting a gundog was quite a change for me. However, I think it was the right decision based on our life style at the moment and, much as I love terriers, I think it’s taught me that I might be more of a retriever / spaniel person at heart. However, it hasn’t stopped me longing for a Sealyham terrier – maybe one day.

By the way, @Finsky what fantastic news! I am really looking forward to reading your posts and following your journey.

We had success this morning :D. The boy was in good mood and performed well and Iida was tickled with delight when she did meet him again. Whole 15mins of 'steam' was over and done in no time. So now they've had 2 completed rounds and we will be leaving it to that...the waiting game is on.

She had working lakelands but they still had the elongated face and nose ...i prefer the fell terriers to look at ....
We had to go to wales to get our last jack russell as nobody around here had working types so they didnt dock their tails
There is different 'lines' in working Lakies. There was one Fell terrier breeder, who's 'Middleton line' did had the stronger and slightly wider skull. I don't know how much influence from his breeding is still really showing in these dogs as it was quite some time ago since the breeder's last dogs were active.
But both of these, the stud and my girl are said to have Middleton line in their breeding. I've had one other dog that the Lakie X Parson's JR, Lakie side had some Middleton in it and that too had very similar skull or head in general as well as the strong prey drive/working instinct.
I don't know...I just read about these things and pick up bits and pieces from those who actively work their dogs. Mine are allowed to work if the opportunity and demand is there but I don't actively take mine to be worked. Their main purpose for me is 'busy' terrier companion. :D

Will the pups have docked tails ...

Thank you...yes, exciting is the word and I cannot wait to find out the results for this pairing.
Originally I have been looking another 'ginger' terrier for a stud, but I just didn't seem to come across suitable 'case'...that being that if the dog was nice, there was something 'funny' with the owner or something else.
But then I came across with Diesel and it was one of those 'it felt just right' moments. The stud's owner had another one too, Diesel's brother but as we went to see the dogs...I set my eyes on this one straight away.
I suppose in reality it would not have made much difference as both carry the same genes and the resulting pups usually come in different colours and coats... but still. I liked what I saw and that's it and not only that, Iida seemed to be more friendlier with Diesel on the first meeting as well..so both of us are pleased with the outcome so far.
We have 'back up plan' already in place if Iida doesn't carry pups from this pairing. There was 6 month old 'ginger' boy there...but still too young for the 'duty'. So next time round, it probably would be available and able to offer more of the 'ginger' blood for the blend. I try to cover all possible angles for this venture.. ;)

So, it is day 15 and while I'm trying patiently wait to see any signs of the development to emerge and when I don't have anything new to report yet...I just rattle a little to calm my nerves
I'm still trying to learn about all this...reading a book, researching internet and I have watched whelping videos on youtube...OMG! Ok...as scary as they are but the blessing is that what I read in the book is starting to make more sense.
Iida's breeder gifted me with his 'bitch book' for he doesn't need it anymore and that book has passed hands several times from one terrier owner to other. Iida's breeder was pleased to find out at there is one dog from the litter of 9 to carry on the genes and he could pass this book on. In return I promised to keep him informed with the news and one day pass this book on for the next terrier owner on line. Yes, the book has seen its best days and some of the general information is not quite up to date..but the main things do not really change. And what I treasure most, there is all the hand written notes and even a list of all the items and costs that was involved 'making' my girl and her brothers & sisters...I have prepared shopping list there!

And I also thought I better take more detailed photo of the girl and her tummy so I can later on spot and compare any physical changes as the days go by.
This is day 12 from the mating and the end of the season;

My word - her Mum looks varminty - a proper terrier!

You won't see much for weeks. Then at about 7-8 weeks you can put a hand gently on her tummy and feel the whelps as they move around. By 9 weeks you wonder how on earth they stay in there, they are so lively.

I will sit tight and try to wait patiently until the 5 weeks is full and then I will take Iida to scan. But I just cannot help but look at each every possible change in her body and behaviour and think 'is that a sign!?'
:D Now varmint was a new word for me and I had to check it out. Lol....she does look like it but ain't really....lot of it is just a pose. Yep...she is 'proper' terrier but she is very soft natured. Would she have been smaller when we went for a pup, I would have gladly put the mum in my pocket and walked away rather than having that little creature that was running around with another similar creature like a pair of hurricanes! :D But I'm glad that I did witness it as that was first time I saw two terrier pups in full blown play mode...and it does look scary indeed!

The Day 12 photo may have been at the end of her season, but she's still in 'modelling for PlayDog magazine' mode :D

It is, of course, entirely your choice, but I never have bitches scanned. It doesn't make them any more pregnant if they are, it won't make them pregnant if they aren't, it isn't all that accurate, it's hassle and expense, and it is only a moment in time - a dog can be pregnant, be scanned, and reabsorb or abort the litter later on. I just wait until the puppies wiggle.
