As some may know im considering 2 pups- mad i may be?!

I am thinking this as i hear alot that whippets love their company of other whippeys, and that one whippet craves company of other k9s.

Are there any people here that have 1 pup/dog that is fine on their own, including when left alone, without humans? Or is everyone here multi-dog owners!

Chelsea (whippet/terrier mix) was an only whippet for her first 3 years as we lived in a small flat and didn't have a proper garden. She did fine on her own. It just depends on personality to be honest. I worked 3-4 hours a day away from home and she adapted well to being home alone during that time. Crated for the first year (otherwise she chewed walls and skirting boards etc), and then free.

I know several on here who have bought two pups together and they've done fine, but my personal preference is one pup at a time with some time between them. I feel this way you can give proper amount of time to socialising and training. Of course it depends on what you're doing and how much time you spend away from home.

Just some thoughts.

I have just one whippet, although I would love another...still working on hubby..he will relent eventually !!

I had two dogs for years who were great pals and lost them both within months of each other 3years ago. We got Meg in Aug 2003 and she is an only dog.

What I would say is that having had two dogs before, and now just a single one it is different. She interacts with us more and seems to be much more part of the family...in that, she doesnt have another dog to play with so annoys the kids until they play with her!! I suppose she is more dependant on us for her amusement. I remember when I used to walk my two old girls they would be off playing together...with Meg I have to play with her.

She is absolutely fine being left, although it doesnt happen very often, and she just goes to sleep....in fact, I think she likes us going out and she can sneak up onto the bed :b

I do wonder if hubby gives in and lets me have another whether she would like to have a friend at all....or whether she is quite happy having all the attention!!

Hi, I only have 1 whippet, he is 4 1/2 months old and he is fine on his own. He gets all our love and plays with his dog friends when he goes out to the park each day. He never seems lonely. Just happy to get our undivided attention . :)
 
I think what's most important is that your whippet feels loved and secure, and part of the family. Eli seems to have been fine with and without company, although i think given the choice most whippets would prefer to have a friend of their own kind! We got Eli as a puppy, then at around 18mths he was joined by our little rescue whippet Piper who we guessed was about 7. She'd had a very hard life, but despite that & the age gap,they adored one another. Our little love was only with us for 2 years before she died, and Eli was heartbroken, but seemed to adapt reasonably quickly, and has been an only dog for the past 2 years, able to be left alone and no trouble at all. He does however sulk for days when his cousins Lottie&Frank have gone home,which indicates to me that he'd rather not be alone really! So now that circumstances allow we're looking for a new friend for him, this time a puppy! Good luck with whatever you decide to do, and most importantly, love your whippie! :wub:
 
George is nearly two and is an only whippet, and I do see a difference in him between the times when he's at home with only people for company and when we are at my mums & grannys houses who both have whippets too, Rosie and Mollie. When he's at home he clings to me and follows me everywhere and I am his main source of entertainment and affection, but when we are at either my mums or grannys house he pals up with the other whippet and they spend the whole day doing everything together, and he really only comes to me to check that I'm still around. So he definitely loves the company of another dog, which is a big reason why I am considering getting another (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! lol :- " )
 
I had 2 greyhounds and 1 whippet x before I got my first whippet. Oliver (whippet x) definitely wanted another dog to "pile up" with and the greyhounds weren't much good at this as they preferred their own space. Albie arrived and everybody got what they wanted! They will play together and amuse each other but they also love their cuddles with me - often at the same time! :wacko:

sounds a good idea that i get my pup, then once he's say 6-7 months we will find him a pal :huggles:

just been reading that poll, OH just thinks we are all mad!!! (w00t)

We've only got one whippy (and a greyhound). NEED MORE!!!!!! :teehee:
 
We only have one, sadly, due to OH being so mean :( :( and he thinks he has been really nice in letting me have ONE!! :angry: :angry:

I would love another, but I must say Zephyr is a very happy dog and lives in a very busy household with cats and children and me at home for company, plus he has lots of exercise and goes to shows and does agility and obedience, so I suppose he is not too lacking in stimulation! :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :p

This time last year i was working on Whippet number one as OH was getting himself yet another Greyhound. Now 3 whippets later and the whole house chaotic he has said 'You're NOT buying any more!!' as mean as that sounds he has said that when breed either from our Greyhound or Whippet then i can keep as many as i want (w00t) SUCKER!!!!!! I have got it in writing as well so there's no turning back on his word :p

Men think that they can control us and lay down the law and its a womans job to let him think that its working but a bit of hitting him with a total 'downing of tools' in whatever department is dear to him the average male will usually crumble :oops:

That's true, but the trouble is he is (apart from the one exception :angry: ) a wonderful husband and a fantastic father to our two children, and I really want us to grow old together :huggles: :wub: - plus, who would look after the children when I go off to dog shows etc! :p :- "

BUT, I do keep up the drip, drip effect, hoping that one day.......................... :luck:

The worst thing though is coming on K9 and seeing all these gorgeous puppies and wonderful pics of piles of whippets, and it's tearing me apart :(

I know just how you feel Zephyr...Im in exactly the same position. I keep showing him puppy pictures in the hope he will cave in...but sadly, showing no sign :( . I keep hoping I mind find a poor lost whippet puppy somewhere that I would have to bring home coz I know once a pup was here he would fall in love :lol: I cant bring myself just go and get a pup though without him agreeing ahead.

One day....hopefully....

or, if someone does happen to find a poor lost whippet puppy, could they just leave it outside my door, ring the bell and run away :- "

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO come January (hopefully :sweating: ) whippy number 1 will be turning up.

ps this is going to sound awful, but I only got number one in 2003
