house train issue.... can anyone advise?

We have had our 8-month-old rescue collie a month now. Most of the time she is as good as gold - clean all night and normally goes to the back door to ask to go out during the day. Randomly she will poo in the house. This morning we went for a walk, then spent five minutes in the garden in case she needed to go. Not interested. five minutes inside the house and she suddenly pooed. I was near the back door and she didn't ask to go out. Can anyone advise why? I'm assuming it's because she gets caught unawares and just has to go there and then? She always seems upset afterwards so I'm sure she knows it is not what she should do. Incidently, she never pees inside. All advise welcome. Thank you

It's very early days and you likely don't know how toileting was dealt with in her last home - for example, whether toileting was scolded, whether being let out was haphazard, etc.

Do you reward her when she toilets outside? That helps her learn or remember that holding her toilet until she is outside is well worthwhile. And that's what cements toilet training.

Do it immediately so it's clear the reward is for toileting and not for anything else, and be generous to make it really worth the effort of holding.

Thank you for your reassurance. Yes, we always reward her when she goes outside and normally she does. It was just the randomness that was puzzling me. Patience I think.....

mine would go inside at night while we was asleep, put a dog door in seams alright now, most time he will hold it till in goes out never hardly goes in garden.
