Well, she is here, and just delightful. 2 full days and not one mess in the house. She likes her crate too, and hasn't been anything other than amazing. She has eaten well, chewed what she is meant to lol, and sleeping more than she is doing anything else! She is so cuddly. Already, she is amazing with the children, my eldest was quite cross that they couldnt all sleep together.

As expected, Oliver the terrier is taking time to warm to her. Bear loves her already, but Olly is really quite unimpressed. We are therefore taking things slowly but surely, and being very careful to offer the best introductions.

We really would have struggled bringing another male into the home, and definately think a female is more acceptable to Olly, but still, he has had his moments over the last day or two.

Any hints or tips other than the common ones to ensure that, in time, he learns to accept she is here to stay. x

I just neve let a pup annoy the others by distracing them with toys etc

The pup soon learns what is acceptable with each of the other dogs .

It does the pup no harm at all to get a telling off from the other dogs from time to time .

They have to know their place ;)

You are right, but at the moment he just watches her, stalking, and the second my back is turned he'll have a go. She is being great and plays with our other boy, and is being relatively brave towards Oliver (which I think just annoys him more) but he is verging on dangerous towards her. I know in time it will settle and it certainly isnt affecting her, she is happy, eating, exploring, and extremely content already. And one of my Ugg slippers has died ;)
 
The stress isnt getting to her x Infact she is completely unaware of Oliver, and taking everything in her stride. Has anyone else on here really struggled to get a new dog accepted by an oldie?

Oliver is probably just making sure that she knows who is boss. The fact that she is not cowering in abject terror when he threatend her is probably making him really cross. Make a fuss of him and reassure him that he is still top dog. If puppy is getting a lot of attention, he is probably rightfully jealous. Make sure that he gets lots of extra attention, even if it means pushing the puppy aside to make him feel more importiant. Do not let her play with HIS toys or invade any of HIS private spaces. It is easy for a new puppy to grab all the attention especially if you have children in the house. If puppy is being fed its extra meals, get someone to take Oliver into another room and distract him. Perhaps a small food treat until puppy is finished. If your other dogs are not allowed to sit on the furniture or on your lap then puppy should not be allowed to either. Sit on the floor with her instead.

It is very early on and things will sort themselves out in time. Adding the puppy has changed the pack dynamics. Best plan of action is to keep a watchful eye and give Oliver more attention than the puppy so he is reassured that pup is not replacing him in your affections. If you have children, explain the need for this to them.

Hope this helps a bit. My experience is adding slightly older dogs to the pack, but the same goes

It's very early days yet, so don't worry too much.

Keep an eye on them and be prepared to referee if necessary :thumbsup:

My top girl (Jinny) is always a grouchy old madam when a new puppy or temporary boarder comes into the house, but she levels up just fine after a wee while and is now becoming quite complacent about it :lol:
 
How are things going with Oliver?

Is he more accepting yet?
 
Hi

Well, it has been very difficult. He has stalked her and literally waits for us to turn our backs and gone in for the kill so to speak. Zig has been fantastic and too preoccupied with being in love with our other dog and enjoying the first family roast over easter weekend. Then, yesterday, we noticed a very small and slight improvement in Olivers attitude. So, we are taking our time with everything and seeing how things go. She literally hasnt put a paw out of place though, and is by far the best natured puppy Ive ever had. x
 
I wouldn't allow him to stalk her . It's different if she is annouying him and he snaps at her but he needs to be told that is not acceptable .

Whippet pups are just gorgeous . So laid back and such a lovely nature . :wub:
 
Glad things are improving, it must be lovely having a new puppy in the house. She is just so adorable :wub:
 
I'd be alittle concerned about him stalking her :wacko: my really grumpy snappy one is Smugde, but she only tells the puppies off when they annoy her or jump all over her, other than that she used to just ignore them, and was a rear sight to see her cuddled with them.

I do step in when she is being a grumpy cow for no reason and make sure she knows her place.

Maybe feed the puppy before him as he thinks he is in charge, and that position should be filled by you not him, just try to shift the balance with in the pack.

I hope he accepts her soon :luck:

Thank you. Well, I dare say things Are improving. With patterdale in him he's always had issues, and we weren't naive enough to think he'd accept her with open paws. However tonight both my husband and I definately have noticed him being a teeny little bit kinder. She is so non plussed by it all and just taking everything in her stride. She had her little lead on today and came for a walk around the block, she was perfect.
